Unusual orangey-red moss growing on the Cypress trees at Point Lobos Natural Reserve at the Big Sur, California. The moss is called Trentepohlia aurea which is usually green in colour. However in this case the orange / red coloration results from carotenoid pigments in the algal cells - the same pigmentation as you find in carrots.

Aqua in Chicago is architect Jeanne Gang's project that put her on the architectural radar in Chicago. The basic structure is a standard, modern box which is surrounded with slow-rippling, white concrete balconies, giving the skyscraper a sculptural quality. Each individual balcony is unique in size, shape and protrusion. The balconies help to break up wind vortices, minimize wind shear, shade neighboring apartments and prevent birds from colliding with windows. A feat of architectural engineering.
