Two days left to vote in the Shackleton 'Capture the Extreme' Competition.

If you have a moment, I would so appreciate your vote for my image from Pakistan (just click the link and scroll down to the bottom). Either way, I highly recommend looking through the entries; there are some beautiful images there.

Tjørnuvík beach in the Faroe Islands with Risin and Kellingin in the distance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was one of my favourite places in the Faroe Islands. I love the jet black sand of the beach, but above all the legend that goes with the sea stacks.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you have heard it before I apologise!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A long time ago an Icelandic chief wanted the Faroe Islands to be part of Iceland, and his dominion, so one night he sent the Giant and his wife to steal them. Their plan was to hitch a rope to the islands and drag them back towards Iceland. Being creatures of the night though they had to complete their task in a single night before the sun came up. ⁣

⁣They managed to get the rope in place, but as they started to pull, part of the islands came away. They struggled to get the rope secured to a better place but as they got lost in the task at hand they forgot to keep an eye on the sunrise. Before they knew it, dawn was upon them, they turned towards Iceland to hurry home but too late. The first rays of morning sun hit them and turned them to stone.

They stand there to this day, staring westwards towards the home they would never be able to return to.⁣

The Ellsworth mountains, Antarctica. I took this at the end of a two-month-long expedition in the interior of the continent. Once you get up on Antarctica's plateau, the scenery becomes somewhat monotonous, the sky changes with the different moods of the ice cap, but in terms of landscape, it feels very much like being at sea.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Day after day, as far as the eye can see, is a desert of broken ice and sastrugi. After a long expedition, seeing nothing other than a flat horizon, anything else feels like a blessed relief.

While not the most impressive mountains I have seen before, these were undoubtedly some of the most welcome!

A winter shot from Yorkshire.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In my opinion, winter and autumn are the most visually appealing seasons, however, I think it is human nature to get excited at the first signs of spring. It must be very much in our collective consciences, the idea of 'getting through' the winter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the UK, it feels a bit like that with our latest lockdown; finally, the end of it is in sight, and everyone can start to imagine getting back to some kind of normality. Not unlike coming through a particularly harsh winter before we had insulated houses!

The Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The waterfall in the background is called 'Break-neck Falls', hopefully in anticipation of what might happen if you fell down them rather than what did happen!

The image is from Iceland and shows the type of landscape that made NASA choose Iceland as a training ground for some of the Mars missions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have been fascinated by the first images coming back from the Mars Perseverance rover. Every single detail of the mission is mind-blowing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And the idea that the mission is a dress rehearsal for sending humans, cant not stir the imagination. The idea of those first people stepping out in the Martian landscape is pretty exciting!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you were given the option would you volunteer to be one of those first people? To be the Shackleton, Amundsen, or Nansen of our time!

The Cairngorms, in the Scottish Highlands.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a mostly treeless landscape, this lone tree is a lovely sight. It clings to the edge of the burn braving the harsh Scottish weather and the persistent nibbling of the deer that do their best to stunt its growth. Against all the odds, though, it clings on!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is especially lovely in autumn when the leaves turn a beautiful orange.

Saksun is a hamlet on Streymoy Island. In the 19th century, this church was taken from its original location in another village and carried over the mountain to this spot.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This meant that the inhabitants of Saksun did not have to walk up over the mountain to the neighbouring village every time they wanted to go to church.
