Freshly made polymer plates sunbathing on our conveniently sunny windowsill on this week’s Photopolymer Gravure Masterclass.

This final exposure to UV light fully hardens the polymer to allow the plates to be printed. After hardening, the plates are trimmed, filed, and finally inked up for printing.

We're excited to announce that we'll be exhibiting at The Other Photography Fair at the Hilton London Olympia, a brand-new fair specialising in vintage 19th and 20th century photography.

We'll have prints on display by Lux Darkroom directors Constanza Isaza and Andrés Pantoja, alongside prints we've made for other artists through our studio editioning service. We'll also be running a live photogravure demonstration on the day, so if you've ever been curious about the process, come and watch it in action.

The fair runs on the same weekend as Photo London and is just a short distance away, so if you're already planning to be in town, it's well worth a visit.

Date: Saturday 16 May 2026
Time: 9.30 am -- 4.30 pm (early bird entry from 8.30 am)
Location: Hilton London Olympia, 380 Kensington High Street, London W14 8NL

The tarlatan pile at the end of two days of photogravure printing. Tarlatan, or scrim, is the open-weave fabric used to wipe ink into and across the surface of the plate, and to remove the excess before printing.

Ours comes from Intaglio Printmaker in Southwark, London, a real-life Aladdin’s cave full of printmaking treasures.

Day 2 of our Introduction to Photopolymer Gravure workshop is where things get really fun: by this time, participants are confident in their inking and wiping skills, have learned how to make plates, and are looking for a creative challenge. Donna Lancia finished the workshop on a high with this beautiful print made with gold ink on black paper.

We were so lucky that George Thomas, one of the participants on our recent photogravure workshop, works at John Purcell Paper

George brought along a stash of beautiful Japanese papers to work with and generously shared these with the other participants, so everyone went home with a very special print on Japanese paper.

The translucency and surface of these papers adds an extra depth and richness to photogravure prints - there’s nothing quite like it. This print is from George’s series of photograms of paper/stationery related objects, and is made on Sekishu Shi.

Thank you George!

After spending the morning looking at prints and watching Constanza’s demo, it was time for the students to pull their own first photogravure prints.

We absolutely love introducing people to this process: the look on their faces when they see their first prints is priceless!

Constanza giving a printing demo on last week’s Introduction to Photopolymer Gravure workshop. This allowed the students to see the full process of inking, wiping, and pulling a print in action before repeating the process with their own plates.
