To mark the the end of Pride 2026 I am sharing this DPS from a series of analogue images I shot for Attitude Magazine to support an article by Richard Bevan examining the testimonies of those unable to share their grief at the loss of friends and lovers to AIDS related illness. A unique grief exacerbated by prejudice hidden as recently as the 1990’s - there was shame too and this was long before the equal marriage act when majority public opinion was against equal rights.

Shot at the notorious Brompton cemetery using colored gels mixing them using ambient and flash combined.

Thanks to everyone that fought for.the rights and freedoms we celebrate now that we never imagined we would see in our lifetime.

Over a year ago I was sitting outside the Fitzrovia Chapel with Chris Packham sharing a vegan croissant. We were at the location of the installation of the large Lightbox of my last portrait of him as the patron saint of ecology surrounded by the most at risk indigenous species in the UK.

He shared with me that he was working with on a new documentary - I leapt up and silently re-enacted the Ascent of Man. Silent communication seems to work well with Chris but I think he humours my ideas with the expectation that I will never be able to pull them off! (I should stress this could not have been achieved without the amazing and continued support of Radio Times particularly its legendary picture director Tristan Hopkins).

The cover concept was to transform Chris to an earlier version of our humanity - again ‘in camera’ with some stunning make up and prosthetic work.

Chris Packham tacitly demands diligence on the science hence the change in the eye color from early to mid-Palaeolithic to modern Chris who has blue eyes. Genetic studies indicate that the specific HERC2/OCA2 gene mutation that turns off melanin production for blue eyes occurred approximately 10,000 to 14,000 years ago (with some estimates placing the common ancestor window between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, ancient remains pushing sparse markers to roughly 17,000 years ago).This places the emergence right at the very end of the Upper Paleolithic / transition to the Mesolithic period.
