Honda built something genuinely historic here. 🏆

The CR250M Elsinore wasn't just another motocross bike, it was Honda's very first two-stroke production motorcycle, and the first dirt bike they ever built from scratch rather than adapting a street machine. Named after the legendary Elsinore Grand Prix in Lake Elsinore, California, it arrived at exactly the right moment. The popularity of the CR250M exploded when Gary Jones rode a completely stock example to win the 1973 AMA 250 National Motocross Championship, the best advertisement Honda could have asked for.

Powered by a 248cc two-stroke single, the Elsinore featured a chrome-moly frame and aluminium bodywork to keep weight down. It was the starting point for everything Honda would go on to achieve in the dirt. Proper pioneer stuff.

1999 Kawasaki KX500 - The Beast

499cc liquid-cooled two-stroke single. Around 65 horsepower. KIPS power valve. The most powerful production dirt bike ever made, and one of the last. By 1999, the 500cc class was dead, the AMA had killed it six years earlier, but Kawasaki kept building these monsters anyway. Same basic design since 1990. Barely updated. Didn't need to be. The KX500 dominated desert racing, won Baja, won National Hare and Hounds, and terrified anyone brave enough to twist the throttle. Magazines once called it "unrideable." Riders called it a career-ender. But in the right hands, nothing could touch it. Kawasaki would keep selling these until 2004, unchanged and unmatched. The four-strokes eventually took over, but they never replicated the violence. The last of the big-bore two-stroke warriors.

The enduro class of 1986 was stacked. 🌲

The Yamaha IT200 was a serious off-road weapon, liquid-cooled, lightweight, and part of Yamaha's legendary IT series that had been dominating trails since the late 70s. The Kawasaki KDX200 countered with its own two-stroke punch, a confident chassis, and Kawasaki's Uni-Trak single-shock rear suspension that soaked up the rough stuff with ease. Both were trail-ready right out of the crate.
