Today I had the joy of meeting one of Britain’s most majestic residents the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus). Known as the largest native land mammal in the UK, these incredible creatures have roamed our landscapes for thousands of years.

This young one carried such a quiet grace, a reminder that even in the heart of London, wild beauty still thrives. Richmond Park is home to hundreds of red and fallow deer, living freely as they have since the 1600s. Watching them wander feels like stepping into another world, where time slows and nature takes the lead.

Captured with my Sony 100-400mm lens, a tool that lets me step closer into their world without disturbing their peace. Moments like these remind me why protecting our green spaces matters not just for us, but for every life that calls them home. 🌿

A pair of White-browed Fantails (Rhipidura aureola) engaged in a feeding interaction likely a parent nourishing its fledgling or a courtship gesture.
These insectivorous passerines are known for their bold tail-fanning and close social bonds.
Captured during a brief pause in the canopy, this moment reveals the softer side of survival.

The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is not just any elephant it's the largest subspecies of the Asian elephant, and uniquely adapted to the island's diverse habitats.

Here's what makes them stand out:

• Largest Asian elephant subspecies - with males reaching up to 3.5 meters in height.
• Unique features - smaller ears than African elephants, but larger bodies compared to other Asian subspecies.
• Mostly tuskless - most Sri Lankan males don't have tusks, making tuskers (males with tusks) rare and highly revered.
• Cultural icons - deeply embedded in Sri Lankan tradition, religion, and history. Elephants play key roles in temple processions and are seen as symbols of wisdom and strength.
• Keystone species - their movements and feeding habits help shape the environment, making them vital to forest health and biodiversity.

Spending time with these giants in the wild is not just a thrill it's a privilege.

The Gentle Giants of Yala | Feeding Habits
of Elephants..!

Elephants in Yala National Park are herbivores and spend most of their day feeding up to 16 hours a day! Their diet includes:

Grasses - their primary food source, especially during the wet season.

Leaves, bark, and twigs - especially from trees like Palu, Weera, and kumbuk.

Shrubs and creepers - great sources of fiber
Wild fruits - when available, they love wood apples and wild figs.

Freshwater plants - from waterholes and tanks during the dry season.

Their feeding plays a crucial role in shaping the ecosystem, clearing pathways and helping seeds disperse making them true ecological engineers of the wild.

Spotted this stunning Painted Stork during golden hour at Yala, and it truly lived up to its name. With its vibrant pink plumes and bright yellow beak, it looked like nature's own artwork in motion.
What makes this bird so special?

Painted Storks are wetland specialists, often seen gracefully wading through shallow waters in search of fish. Their striking colors and calm elegance make them a favorite among bird watchers and a rare treat for wildlife photographers.

Another magical moment in the wild I'll never forget.
