You don’t need to be someone who normally loves being in front of a camera to have maternity photos.

I’ll guide you with posing and keep things relaxed.

The aim is for you to still look like you, just photographed really well.

The posed newborn photos are beautiful, but I always think the family ones matter just as much.

This is what your baby arrived into. Mum, Dad, arms around them and two people looking slightly more awake than they probably felt 😂

One day this photograph is going to belong to your child as much as it belongs to you.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want for your newborn session.

Some parents have a really clear idea of colours and styles, others just tell me what they like and leave the rest to me. Either works.

We’ll plan things around your taste, your baby and what they’re happy with on the day.

Mums are very good at making sure everyone else is in the photos and then somehow disappearing from them themselves.

So yes, I’m always going to encourage you to get in some photos too. You don’t need to feel camera ready, and you definitely don’t need to know how to pose.

I’ll help with all of that.

This age is brilliant because they’re doing something new every five minutes.

You don’t need them to sit perfectly still or grin on command either. I’d much rather let them move around, play a little and catch the expressions that actually look like them.

That’s usually when the best photos happen.

I have questions about whoever first looked at a newborn baby and thought, you know what this needs? A ridiculously tiny bed.

But I’m glad they did!

There’s something about using miniature furniture that makes babies look even smaller, particularly when you can see those curled up legs and little hands tucked underneath their face.

And that scale is worth recording, because before very long you genuinely do look back and wonder how on earth they were ever this small.

Possibly the sleepiest fox ever photographed.

I’m love newborn setups that lean into something a little different without becoming ridiculously busy. The warm rusty colours, the texture and the little knitted fox work together beautifully here, but there’s still one obvious subject.

There is something extremely funny about how pleased the two big brothers look here compared with the baby, who appears to be thinking, I have made a terrible mistake.

Sibling photographs don’t need everybody looking in the same direction with identical smiles. Sometimes it’s the difference between all their expressions that makes the picture.

With three children, you’ve already got three personalities to work with. Trying to iron all of that out would miss half the point.

Now THIS is a newborn portrait with absolutely no intention of blending quietly into the background.

I love when photography gets to cross over into illustration and become something that feels more like artwork than a traditional studio portrait. It isn’t going to appeal to everybody, and that’s actually a good thing. Photography shouldn’t all look the same.

Personally, I think the tiny mouse desperately trying to reach the moon deserves some recognition too.

One of the best things about including older children in newborn photographs is that they stop the whole thing becoming too polished.

They bring personality. They move. They pull faces. They sometimes cooperate beautifully and sometimes decide the photographer is considerably less interesting than whatever is happening on the other side of the room.

And that’s fine.

The goal isn’t to prove your children can sit perfectly on command. It’s to have photographs that show what your family looked like when the newest member had only just arrived.
