We’re going through a bit of a heatwave in the south of the UK at the moment. For any film photographers out there if you’re worried about the heat affecting your film, consider using Kodak ProImage 100; it’s a low ISO film, but the chemistry was actually specifically developed for (and it’s primarily marketed in) hot and humid environments of Asia and South America. It is readily available here though, and can tolerate being out in the heat all day.

I’ve shared previously how it’s often overlooked in favour of others in this blog post from last year, it’s a lovely film stock but it’s got that added benefit for the heat

It’s been a busy few weeks so there hasn’t been a for a while. But this evening I was organising photo backups and found these two that I took as part of a test roll, testing my Zorki 1C with Ilford HP5.

It’s a small section of my collection which is up over 70 cameras, they are more or less all functional so I will share results from all of these cameras eventually…

What’s the best country you’ve ever been to? If you had to pick just one, what would you base your decision on? Would you base it on the scenery, the people, the culture? What is it about the culture that makes it special, is it because it’s so different from your own culture, or is it because it feels familiar?

I’m not even sure how I can answer my own question; everywhere I’ve been has had its own highlights in ‘categories’ that are so difficult to compare against each other.

Happy Lunar New Year, this year is the year of the Horse. It seemed fitting to do a today looking back to the celebrations in London.

These were taken around Chinatown and in Trafalgar Square on a Canon EOS 1N, on Kodak Elgar 100 and Portra 400. This is one of the biggest Lunar New Year celebration events outside of China and is always worth a visit

My recent trip to Krakow included a visit to the concentration camps at Auschwitz Memorial / Muzeum Auschwitz. I took an old Soviet era Zorki camera, I believe from the 1960s and finished up a colour roll before using a black and white (Ilford HP5) film for the first time in several years. I created some atmospheric images and it felt quite fitting to use black and white given the history.

So has come round again so quickly, and I even missed it last week. I’m not even sure if it’s still popular, it became quite a big thing for a while. Either way, I like it as a hobby photographer because it makes me reflect on past work. It’s important to look forward and embrace the present. I get that, and on the other side people get stuck too much in the past.

This isn’t about getting ‘stuck’ in the past, I think it’s about analysing your work in a constructive way and that is an important skill. Maybe even a difficult skill.

I studied photography back when socical media wasn’t so much of a thing so there’s a lot of “history”. The last few Throwback posts have been relatively recent, but I really want to revisit some of my very old work.

Today’s doesnt go nearly that far back. It was back to a somewhat difficult time, and the best effort I could do at scanning a negative. It was 2015 and it was taken with a Kodak No2 Folding Brownie (more than 100 years old by now). I’m glad I’ve got a solid workflow for digitising my negatives now so I’ll be looking to rescan a lot of the old work over time. Perhaps I’ll prioritise this photo to see if it really was any good 🧐
