Andrew Loog Oldham was recording Alma Cogan in 1965 and 1966 as part of the singer’s efforts to evolve her career from the enormous stardom she experienced in the 50s and early 60s as a light entertainment artist to a more contemporary one.

She was a lovely person and great fun to be around, although on the day I covered the recording she was feeling quite low with a sore throat. These sessions were cut short by her untimely death from cancer at only 34 in October of 1966.

This shot of Slade is from my first session with them when they were still called Ambrose Slade.

I took them down to Winchelsea near Hastings on the Sussex coast and we spent a chilly afternoon beside the sea.

It was the beginning of a long partnership with me shooting nearly 40 sessions with them including seven album covers.

Wham! On the cover of 'Smash Hits'

On this day, 1983, this image of Wham! featured on the cover of the August 1983 edition of ‘Smash Hits' magazine.

Shot in my Hampstead studio for the cover and pull-out poster of the August issue of Smash Hits magazine, I made a beach scene to echo the band’s recent Club Tropicana hit which was in the charts at the time. I designed the shot so that fans could stick it on their walls either way up according to which of Andrew or George was their favourite!

Keith Richards sitting in front of Blue Lena, 1966 — Limited Edition Print

Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones is photographed in front of his Bentley in West Sussex, 1966. In the summer of 1966, I shot a series of 'At Home' photos with each of the Rolling Stones. This photo of Keith Richards was shot at his house 'Redlands' and he had just bought this beautiful Bentley which he names Blue Lena after the great singer Lena Horne!

Happy Birthday Ron!

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael formed their first band Halfnelson in Los Angeles in 1968 and issued their debut album four years later when the two brothers also opted to re-name their band Sparks. After the UK Number 2 success of their debut single ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us’ and the Top 5 album Kimono My House in 1974, Sparks notched up a string of hit singles and albums during the 70s. Their 1980 album Terminal Jive disappointed in the UK, but was a big hit in Europe and elsewhere. The pair returned to the charts in the 1990s and in 1997 issued a new version of their first hit under the billing Sparks vs Faith No More. To date they have released 28 albums!

The outfit are still going strong!

I loved Sparks! They’re a great band who made some terrific music and had a wonderfully weird image. Brothers Ron and Russell worked brilliantly off each other and understood the dynamic of a photo shoot, making them superb subjects. I shot several sessions with them and we became good friends for a while. The black and white shots for the Terminal Jive album were from one of the strangest and funniest shoots I have ever done!

This odd shot of Mick and Brian was taken during the rehearsals for the January 1967 performance on the TV show “Sunday Night at the London Palladium” which was the most important, televised variety show in the UK at the time. The band caused a sensation by refusing to go on the carousel at the end of the show which was the tradition and all the performers were expected to appear.
