This photo was taken in a Caracol in Oventic, Chiapas. Those who work in Caracoles do not show their faces to visitors, and much less cameras, as they are still fighting against the government for control of their land. Most will cover their face with a balaclava, but for those who don’t have one handy they will remain hidden for the duration of outside visitors. This Caracol is open to visitors (after a lengthy identity check at the border), and here you can see where local efforts to provide a good quality of life for the surrounding indigenous population has been successful. On this piece of land high up in the mountains there is a school, doctor, mechanic, and other services needed for the local population to thrive. As a visitor you can buy organic coffee grown by the collective, and artisanal pieces hand embroidered by the women.
