The Volunteers Who Make Lyme Regis Shine
Lyme Regis is renowned for its stunning coastline, rich history and strong sense of community. While visitors are drawn to its iconic Cobb, vibrant seafront and welcoming atmosphere, much of what makes the town special is made possible by an extraordinary network of volunteers. With it being Volunteers' Week, we pay tribute to the volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise to support local organisations, events and residents. Their contribution is often behind the scenes, but its impact is felt every day.

The RNLI Lyme Regis volunteer crew and support team provides a vital lifesaving service, responding in challenging conditions to keep people safe on the water. The Rotary Club of Lyme Regis continues its tradition of supporting local causes, fundraising and delivering projects that benefit the wider community.

The team behind Lyme Regis Regatta & Carnival Week works year round to deliver one of the town's most popular events, as well as fireworks displays and other events throughout the year while raising thousands for local good causes. Likewise, the volunteers responsible for Lyme Regis Christmas Lights help create a festive atmosphere that brightens the town each winter.

The Lyme Regis majorettes have become a familiar and much-loved part of local celebrations, thanks to the commitment of volunteers who dedicate their time to training, organising and supporting the group, while volunteers at the Lyme Regis Foodbank provide essential support to individuals and families facing hardship.

Visitors are welcomed by volunteers at the Lyme Regis Visitor Hub, whose local knowledge helps people make the most of their time in the town. The Old School House Café and Welcome Café offers not only refreshments but also friendship, support and a valuable place for people to connect.

Volunteers also play a crucial role in developing opportunities for young people. Local Scout leaders help equip young people with skills, confidence and lifelong friendships, while volunteers at Lyme Regis Football Club and youth teams dedicate countless hours to coaching, organising matches and encouraging participation in sport.

Volunteers support Lyme Regis Pantomime Society, Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis, and arts organisations, Lyme Regis Museum, Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, The Town Mill, Lyme Regis Coastguard, Turn Lyme Green, First Responders, British Legion, environmental projects, schools, transport, health initiatives, heritage groups and many other community activities. Many do so without seeking recognition, motivated simply by their commitment to Lyme Regis and its people.

The vibrancy of Lyme Regis is built on this spirit of service. To every volunteer whether your contribution is large or small, public or behind the scenes, thank you! Your dedication helps make Lyme Regis the special place that residents cherish and visitors remember long after they leave.

Next up in our Faces of Lyme series is Seafront Attendant Lewis. Over the past week, Lewis has done a fantastic job keeping the seafront looking its best, regularly emptying bins and helping to maintain a clean and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy.

With the recent spell of glorious weather bringing huge numbers of visitors to the beach, it's been an especially busy and challenging time, making his hard work all the more appreciated.

Well done Lewis!

The Rotary Club of Lyme Regis has donated £500 to YFW Bloodbikes, a charity whose dedicated volunteers provide a free, rapid, and reliable emergency medical motorcycle courier service supporting the NHS 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The charity transports blood, platelets, blood and tissue samples, medication, documents, CT scans, and medical equipment between hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, and private addresses across Dorset and much of Somerset.

John McCallum of the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis said: “At a time when fuel costs are rising, for YFW it is a huge imposition on their precious funds, all of which come from donations from members of the public.

“We felt it absolutely necessary to support this vital service organisation and hope it encourages others to donate.”

If you wish to support the important work of YFW Bloodbikes, you can make a donation via their website.

Hundreds Join Lyme Regis Paddle-Out Protest Against Sewage Pollution - Campaigners and water users gathered today at Lyme Regis as part of the nationwide Paddle-Out Protest organised by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). Lyme Regis was one of 56 locations across the UK taking part in the demonstrations calling for an end to raw sewage discharges into rivers and seas, alongside demands for better monitoring and greater transparency from water companies.

At midday, swimmers, paddleboarders, gig rowers and other sea users entered the water from Lyme Regis’s sandy beach in a symbolic protest against pollution affecting Britain’s waterways. Local organisers had asked participants to gather from 11.30am before paddling out together at noon.

SAS said communities across the South West were protesting “against South West Water’s shocking record of sewage pollution”. The charity argues that repeated sewage spills are harming marine ecosystems, threatening public health and undermining confidence in bathing waters.

The Lyme Regis event was supported locally by campaigners including the River Lim Action Group and local SAS representatives. Organisers described the protest as part of growing national pressure on the Government, regulators and water companies ahead of proposed reforms to the water industry.

Across the country, similar demonstrations were held on beaches, rivers and lakes as campaigners demanded tougher regulation and investment to tackle sewage pollution.
