Transitions - River Otter
One of the early shots from the beautifully colourful sunrise this week. For the first couple of frames I'd used a longer focal length to concentrate on the strong warmth on the horizon, but soon realised that by going wider there was a benefit to colour contrast with the inclusion of the upper blue areas of sky. It also meant that the slightly blurred pines reflection was less prominent in the frame. The gentle breeze would eventually drop away to nothing, but you have to make decisions to deal with the here and now not with how you’d like things to be!

Strong September sunrise - Steamer steps
Thank goodness for two things:
1 That I checked out the window to see what the sky was looking like at 0530 with sunrise at 0641. Forecasts were adamant there was going to be full thick cloud cover.
2 Mornings like this don't come around that often! In terms of fully appreciating how special this was and secondly to be able to have the time to consider properly which of the many, many images I made that should be kept.
I shot at the same two spots I'd visited yesterday which had less spectacular light, despite a better forecast. Additionally today I also ventured down onto the beach here after this image to get the sun glinting off some beach huts. The first stop made before this, perhaps inevitably was the River Otter and Pines which were the best I've seen in a very long while.

Bye-bye Becky-Boo
This small blue boat has featured in many of my dawn photographs of the Beach at Budleigh. For the last few years many of the boats have had notices attached to them explaining the need to pay to have them licensed. Nothing ever seemed to be done, the notices were ignored by owners and the process repeated the following Spring.
That is until now.
This collection of craft were corralled in the car park, I presume awaiting disposal. Marine waste is an environmental issue on many of our waterways and harbours. I've been photographing an ongoing project 'Long time, no sea' of such decaying boats for over 25 years, many have a real charm to look at. That said, proper disposal and recycling materials is better for our environment.

Scene at a Car show
Away from the rows of vehicles displayed by proud owners were a number of stalls selling car paraphernalia. This lady was having a rummage and fleetingly held up what I think is a tiny green Land Rover - her arm and hand perfectly matching that of the man in the poster.

Lilac time - Buckler's Hard
When I was visiting here recently, I was explaining to my Mum about how lovely the Sea Lavender looks when in bloom. I showed her this spot, but there was very little to be seen.
This is from a beautifully calm morning in 2007. The moored ketch and its reflection was my prime focus and was thrilled to find the Sea Lavender for foreground interest.

The marina has since been extended significantly and sadly, I don't think such a shot would now be possible.

A found section of rock on Portland from back when I seemed to see things like this. It was 2004.
This is a straight scan of the 5x4 film. The Limpet for a left eye seems to anchor the image.
I also shot it on B&W film and that's the version I always think of, but thought this could get some air time.
