A new chapter for Southampton’s waters 🌊🚤
Yesterday, I had the privilege of photographing a truly historic moment — the launch of the City of Southampton’s very first independent lifeboat, the Adrian Rann.
What an incredible occasion to be asked to capture.
The launch brought together Alastair Welch DL, Darren Paffey MP, Rev. Hayley Richens, James Godwin, Mark Lewis, the Salty Sea Dogs and the Rann family, alongside representatives from HM Coastguard, Hamble Independent Lifeboat, GAFIRS, St John Ambulance and many other organisations.
But, most importantly, it was a celebration of the volunteers who have committed their time, energy and dedication to the training needed to make this new voluntary lifeboat service possible.
There was a real sense yesterday that something important was beginning.
Southampton is home to one of the largest and busiest ports in the world, and having an independent lifeboat based here will make a real difference to those who live, work and travel on these waters.
As a photographer, I love being able to tell stories through images — but occasionally you get the opportunity to photograph a moment that you know will become part of local history.
Yesterday was one of those moments.
It was an absolute honour to be there and to capture the launch of Adrian Rann and the people behind this incredible new chapter.

Congratulations to everyone involved — and especially the volunteers who have made this possible.
Fair winds and safe waters, Adrian Rann. 💙
