Mammoth freighters Boeing 777 N703DN was rolled out from STS aviation services for an engine test today, the aircraft is a former Delta Airlines passenger aircraft and has been converted by STS to a freighter with the addition of a side loading freight door. As the engine test bay is unable to accommodate the Boeing 777 it completed the test on taxiway Juliet. Photo by Matthew Ford.

ON THIS DAY - 15-Jun-1982... Manchester Airport, 44 years ago!

G-BKAX, BAC One-Eleven 320, British Caledonian Airways.

Delivered to Laker Airways in Apr-68 as G-AVYZ. Laker Airways ceased operations in 05-Feb-82 and the aircraft was repossessed by Nordic Finance in early Mar-82.

It was sold to British Caledonian Airways on 01-Apr-82 as G-BKAX. It didn't stay with B.Cal for long though and was sold to OBS Ltd in Sep-83. It was immediately sold on to Okada Air, Nigeria, as 5N-AOT. It was damaged beyond repair in a heavy landing at Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on 07-Sep-89.

Note: The aircraft passed through a heavy downpour on final approach. It entered a high sink rate and made a hard landing. It bounced and made the second touchdown on its nose-wheel.

The right nose wheel sheared off immediately and the left nose wheel fractured at the hub. It crumbled under the weight of the aircraft and detached about 90 meters on. The wheel axle then made contact with the runway and cut grooves onto the surface for about 25 metres before the nose leg finally gave way.

The aircraft continued forward on the nose fuselage section and ran on to the left shoulder of the runway. On the shoulder, it ran into a wide trench which was covered up with loose soil and the impact took off the right main gear at the attachment point.

The aircraft eventually came to a stop 735 meters after touchdown. There were no fatalities among the 88 passengers and 4 crew.
