Really sad and questionable to see the scenes tonight at the Hotspur Press, Manchester firefighters are currently putting out the flames on the 19th Century printing Mill.
It’s one of my favourite buildings to photograph, I took these a few years back and never posted them, located on Gloucester Street not far from the Ritz and by the banks of the river Medlock, it’s thought to be Manchesters oldest surviving mill.
Originally a cotton mill called the Medlock Mill, with construction possibly around 1794, with a a fire in the early 1800’s and then bought and rebuilt in 1902 by the Percy Brothers who turned it into a printing press responsible for classic film magazines and comics of that era and their sign still stands on top…
In the past it’s been home to lots of different creatives, artists and studios until 2017.
The mill until today stood as a testament to Manchester’s industrial past and is recognized for its historical and architectural significance.
This building was bought in the recent years but plans paused as there was an application to make the building of listed status.
Here are 3 edits I did, I couldn’t pick just one as I love everything these photos express about the long deep history of this building in this great city.
Is anyone surprised it’s gone up in flames…
