⚡️💃🏻 B I G N E W S! 💃🏻⚡

This year I’ll be exhibiting at MOVE IT - Dance and Performing Arts Show! I’ll be at Stand 515, and I cannot freakin’ wait!! In the build up to the show I’ll be posting more and more, and giving away some tickets for the show too! It’s in London at the ExCel Centre, on the 16th - 18th March, so come on down and say hi.

This image is from the Campaign I helped out on in the summer. You might have seen the ‘Face of Move It’ video that launched - I shot that, and as part of the day I got a few minutes at the end of the shoot to work with the dancers on an image, rather than video, and this was the result. You’ll recognise Leanne from previous images I’ve worked on with her, we’ve also got Daniel, Edwin, Melissa, Liam, & Tevec.

I honestly cannot wait to get down to London to meet loads of people, soak in the atmosphere, and show off my stuff! Keep your eyes peeled for free tickets!

I wrote a blog post about what I got up to in 2017 - take a look!

Hello, and welcome to my round up of 2017! 2017 was a monster year, in almost every measurable way. I shot more than I ever have in more countries than I ever have, I grew creatively, and met more new people than in any of my previous years. In this post I’ve picked one or two jobs from each month...

From my shoot with George Cartwright.

As I was prepping for my shoot with George, I read an article entitled "Oh, Good. Another outdated stereotype of Ballerinas" in . The article was about a massive balloon sculpture in New York, depicting a blonde haired ballerina putting on her ballet shoes. The article was really great because it managed to articulate something I've felt for so long about ballet photography. This idea of the beautiful, saintly, virginal ballerina is just a stereotype. Every pro ballerina I've ever shot has been one fierce woman, because guess what, you don't get to do that job unless you are. Hours, days, months, and years of work go into dancing as a career, and as a result of that, muscles tighten and skin gets stretched. Working with a pro ballerina is like working with a pro athlete. That's not to say that they can't graceful and elegant, but to paint ballerinas as delicate flowers is actually pretty insulting. It's got that reason that I try to get a sense of STRENGTH in my images. I don't photoshop out muscles, or overly smooth out skin - these are things that define these dancers. So bearing all of that in mind is today's shot. George was amazing to work with. She gets it. She works hard, and her catchphrase is "well, I can give it a try", and then knocks it out the park. This is one of the first shots we took, and she smashed it. Look at that pointe!!

Georgie Rose, Norwegian Ballet, 2017.

A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of shooting with Georgie, who dances with the Norwegian Ballet. Trained at the Royal Ballet, she has appeared in all sorts of amazing projects, and joined the Norwegian Ballet in 2015.
So, this shoot. As you can see, Georgie is backlit by an enormous LED wall that we found in Central London, and as soon as I saw it I just knew I had to photograph her there. There's no other light really, apart from the ambient overhead spotlights in the tunnel where the wall is. For this particular shot, I wanted to see a very strong silhouette, and so I asked Georgie to stand profile to me, and freestyle some movements - those movements ultimately led to this shot.

This shoot was brief - we maybe only had 15 minutes with the wall before it was closed off to the public, but in that time we managed to get some really great shots - I'm sure I'll be posting more over the coming weeks. Thanks again to Georgie for doing this!

S H A L A, shot on the roof of the National Theatre, London, Summer 2017.

London is a frantic, fast moving city. Every time I get down there, I like to shoot as MUCH as I can, because firstly, I'm not down super often, and secondly I think it's a city that definitely lends itself to a fast paced work ethic. Basically, I found myself in a situation where due to unforeseen circumstances I had an afternoon free. I worked with the super wonderful Eloise Hymas in the morning, and I asked her if she might know anyone who would like to shoot in the afternoon. After many messages, and a bit of very minor stress, Shala reached out, and said "Sure, I'm in Brick Lane, let's do it". I jumped on the tube, and arrived on Brick Lane, sweaty, sweary, and unsure what was about to happen. Then, I met Shala, and her charming boyfriend Anthony. Instantly, the vibe changed. They were so friendly, inviting, warm, interested in my work, interesting people, and incredibly incredibly talented. We shot a little in Brick Lane, then headed down to the Southbank, where we shot this. All natural light, Shala just freestyled to the tunes Anthony was pumping out of my Bluetooth speaker. We grabbed a beer, shot some more, and I walked away with some images I am incredibly proud of.

A bit about Shala! Shala is a pro dancer, and has just come off tour with Take That. I asked her who else she's worked with, and things got crazy. Pharell, Lily Allen, the list went on and on. BUT, the most exciting thing she did was appear alongside (and I mean literally) ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER in the official advert for last year's Super Bowl. Wow. What a day. What a day.

Recently I had the pleasure of working with Ceara Hoggett, final year student at Northern Ballet School. Ceara just graduated, and is entering that weird, nebulous part of your life once you stop training and start to actually try to get hired to do the thing you've been prepping for. Shooting dance on location is great, and more and more now I've been interested in the relationship between the subject and place.

With Ceara, we went out to the outskirts of Manchester, where you can just see the city skyline in the background. Ceara is originally from the countryside, so I knew I wanted somewhere that felt green and open, but also had hints of the built environment in it, so we settled on here - the outskirts of Manchester city centre.

In terms of light, this is all au naturelle, with the sun setting - another nod to Ceara coming to the end of her time in Manchester studying. I've been moving away from strobes over the last few shoots for my location work - getting back to basics, and it's something I'm starting to love. I'll never stop using strobes completely though! I love them in my commercial work, so we'll see.
