A walk around the place it all began for writer Tyrell Williams.
The Aylesbury estate was the ‘best place on earth’.
A home surrounded by friends, his youth centre, youth workers and of course ‘Big pitch’, the small concrete football field that inspired his Wembley dreams.
As we walked around the estate, he shared stories of friends, families and the tight-knit community that he loved. “Imagine having all your friends in one place. It was the best.”
We reach Wendover block and go up to the 4th floor. Tyrell asks me if I want to go inside. Of course. I want to see the views.
The doors to the flats are boarded up.
Once home to 2000 families, no one lives here anymore.
Instead, residents were sent letters one-by-one forcing them to leave.
A neighbourhood was separated with some families relocated as far as Scotland.
Now, the block will be demolished like many others on the estate to make room for a new private development.
For Tyrell, this estate is home, community and inspired him to write RED PITCH.
The West End show is about 3 young boys, who all grow up on the fictional Reedbury estate (inspired by Aylesbury) and dream of playing professionally. It’s a story of their relationship to one another, their families, ‘making it’ and understanding their place in the world. It’s also about their experiences as they watch their home, as they know it, change around them.
On March 15th, RED PITCH went live to its biggest audience yet at Soho Place.
Big love to everyone for bringing me in, in the way that you have. I can’t wait to see what this show brings to everyone who watches.
