A video taken from inside the winding/engine room, looking down onto a 19th century miner's lift cage.

High up in the roof, suspended on massive timber beams, the original sheave wheels can still be seen in situ. The wooden winding drum remains in place, still wound with steel wire rope, with the operating lever standing beside it.

What an incredible sight to see. Standing in this room, it's easy to imagine the machinery once in operation, the sound of the winding gear, the movement of the cage, and the miners working around it over 140 years ago.

A truly remarkable piece of mining history left almost frozen in time.

A wide angle view of a 19th-century miner's lift cage, found at the end of a 1.4 km horse level in an abandoned lead mine.

It's one of the most impressive things we've ever come across underground, so we'll be sharing plenty more from this place over the next few days, including footage of the original winder. Stay tuned!

Walking down a beautifully arched, stone lined passage to take a look at a 19th century miner's lift cage. One of only a handful that can still be seen underground in the UK.

So wev been digging this for last few days.. none about it fot ages and had little test digs, now we are on the entrance of the main block before getting inside the mine.. can see the old red brick adit entrance dating to around 1920 and found some rail they used when sealing the mine up.. we found old pop bottles and other rubbish dating the seal to around the 1960s.. we are just about to dig in to the main stone archway that was smashed in what this mine was closed in the 1950s..

A closer look at the lift cage, still suspended in a 19th-century lead mine.

It was likely installed around 1880, when the mine was modernised with a hydraulic winding and pumping system.

Who else loves a double archway?

This beautiful example of 19th century engineering sits at the end of a horse level and dates to around the 1860s. The craftsmanship is incredible.

Making our way out of an old coal mine tramway that appears to have been repurposed as a drainage level after the mine closed.

This will be the last video from this place for now, until we've got a plan for getting beyond the collapse. It's something we'll probably be working on later this year.

On our way back out of the coal workings and into the brick arched tramway. The timber props in here are absolutely incredible, some of the best we've come across.

Apologies for the alarm in the background. It seems to make a guest appearance in far too many of our videos! 😂

Crawling into a backfilled section of these old coal workings.

At the end of a beautifully arched brick tramway, we were met with this backfilled section. We were hoping to get through and continue exploring, but the timber supports are in a terrible state.

We think the only way of making any further progress here would be to prop up the collapsed beams ourselves.
