These grumpy looking chicks are fairy terns. The adults lay their eggs straight onto the branches of trees. When the egg hatches, the chick grabs hold of the branch with its strong feet and awaits a buffet of fish from its parents.

The parent only lays 1 egg at a single time which improves the chicks chances of survival, as it would require more energy and more fish to raise multiple chicks.

Pin-tailed whydah photographed in South Africa.

The males have long tail feathers which they use when performing a range of flight acrobatics to attract a female.

The species is also a brood parasite, which means they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds killing any other eggs within the nest. This gives the parasitic chick the best chance of survival.
