Sometimes those dark orange rooms can feel awful for video 😩 (and photography).
But as we edge towords the darker season I thought I’d share this example.

Nope, the video doesn’t perfectly colour match the images and that’s not really important for that brand! She’s not a photographer obsessiong about kelvin colour, she’s busy running her business and what she needs is content to convey a message of “yeah, this is medical but I’m going to make it feel like a spa treatment and really look after you”.

So, when you hit a dark room for video consider if there’s an option to run with the darkness, use the limited ligth to still get the message across?
Without adding actual video light, you will be playing a loosing game trying to make it look light & bright, so do the best with what the situation gives you?

And yes, I dread the dark winter season too... I WANT the lovely bright light 🤪

🤷‍♀️ I’ve bought some of those courses too, we all do it! It’s simply because we don’t recognise the subtle difference between keeping focus on the photography and flowing video in vs. being the person who’s only worrying about video.

Of course a videography or cinematography course is going to teach you exactly that! Of course, those courses aren’t talking about how you fit video into a photography workflow, why would they?!

But remember, you already know so much from photography! So when we take that and layer video in as an extension rather than a wildly different skill it’s going to feel more achievable 😊

💛 Video – In Your Style is all about this, but also all about stepping into getting paid for that video inside your photography business. There’s 1 spot left for next week, I’d love you to join if you’re finally ready to get going with video 😊

Being “only” a photographer who also does video is not a small thing to be. It’s a real, well-paid extra, without the four days, the assistant, or the three-month turnaround 😉

Video – In Your Style is built around exactly that: adding video into the sessions you’re already doing, not becoming a videographer. Ohhh, and it’s especially perfect for photographers working with brands/commercial clients, so much opportunity in those genres for adding video.

We start on Wednesday the 16th of September 😉

Part 2 – Four more ideas for photographers turning your still images into videos. Yeah, this might be a boring flower example but I promise these ideas will work for food photography and all kinds of product photography too.

Do you like/hate any of them?

I’ll share another 3 ideas tomorrow that are all just moving the camera, so save this one and pop back tomorrow 😉

PS: If you are interested in adding video to your photography sessions remember I have two training options in September, Video – In Your Style starts Sep 16th and runs for 6 weeks. Essentials Video kickstart is on Sep 23rd, just one hour on zoom.

Especially after sessions with very sleepy newborns, I always have a panicked moment as they leave where I feel I forgot to record enough video for their film 😳
I always have more than enough for a film, in fact I need very little footage for a minimum viable keep sake film (like SO little!) - I just don’t even notice recording the video anymore, it’s entirely muscle memory, so I feel I didn’t do it 🤷‍♀️

I promise video can be a simple extension of your photography rather than a huge big ‘other’ thing!

I was quite excited about this shoot back in July and excited to bring the gimbal… and then I offloaded the footage and realised hardly any of it was usable for the kind of content I like – most of the clips were too fast/short 🙈

Now I could have used it and made it into one of those crazy reels where each clip is half a second long and pretended that was the aim. But I hate those fast flashy reels and they are not on brand for my client either – so instead I just gave them a few pieces of footage from the gimbal and of course I had lots of other footage from the camera and tripod.

I also come away with images all the time that I don’t use – it’s fine! We try things, sometime they work out and sometimes they don’t... this is true for both pictures and video… we never really stop learning right?
Yet, we are busy pretending on Instagram that we have a 100% success rate, while we quietly feel not good enough 😉

If you are new to video, allow your self time to practise!

PS: If you are a photographer and new to video you could come and join my Essentials video kickstart training on Sep. 23rd. Just one hour to learn the very basic gear and setting (definitely no gimbal needed)

I see them from the house and very evening I think ‘I want to film and photograph that setting’ so one evening last week I did 😊
Hanging out in the fields behind our house in pretty light, what’s not to like… a photographers dream really.

Seriously though, there is an easy gentle way with video that doesn’t require tons of gear or complicated tech. Yep I did take a tripod and of course my trusted filter but it’s just my normal camera 📷

The farmers loves what I got so everyone’s happy 😀

Yep, that’s my trainer with my husbands phone recording a Timelapse of the moving clouds 🤷‍♀️ Sort of a ‘normal-ish’ thing for us… but I did look at the images last night and wonder if it might just be us??
Is this a typical photographer family thing? I can ALWAYS make time go by with a camera and get the others to join in 😀
