The village sign of Martham in Norfolk.

Thank you very much to for sending this sign.

The village sign which is sited on The Green is double sided and unfortunately suffering from the effects of the weather. The spire on the tower of the church of St. Mary pierces the clouds while a woman pleads for her life behind a rather sickly looking knight holding a shield and sword while a ginger headed Viking, axe in hand and horns in helmet has just jumped off his longship and is wondering what to do next. A somewhat comical scene poorly executed. The reverse, shows a Norfolk wherry on the River Thurne with Martham Ferry drainage mill on the opposite bank, strangely the spire of the church is apparent above the scene.

The village sign of High Kelling in Norfolk.

Thank you very much to for sending this sign.

High Kelling didn’t exist until 1987 when it became a civil parish in its own right. The sign shows a rabbit and grey squirrel, both abundant in the area. The building surrounded by trees is the church, formerly the chapel of Bramblewood Sanatorium. On the post is a caduceus is a reference to the Kelling Sanatorium, as it was known, which opened in 1903 and was famed for the healthy air which aided the TB sufferers treated here.

The village sign of Holt in Norfolk.

Thank you very much to for sending this sign.

The sign is based on a tree or trees representing the Holt Lowes a 50 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest area of heath and mixed forest. The owl is from yesteryear when it is said that an owl wandered into the town and was placed in the pound for safe keeping, but they didn’t seem to realise it could fly out of the pound, which it promptly did. There are 24 pavement plaques installed in the town centre in December 2017 as a tourist trail project.

The village sign of Ludham in Norfolk.

Thank you very much to for sending this sign.

The sign shows St Catherine with her wheel, King C**t and the head of St Benet’s Abbey.
According to the explanatory plaque, “In 1019. King Canute gave the manor of Ludham to the Abbey of St Benet at Holme. St Catherine, whose emblem is a wheel, is the patron Saint of the parish church.”

Final capture of the Aqueduct in Seville, this time with a mono edit, hope you like it.

The Aqueduct of Segovia is a Roman aqueduct which was built around the first century AD to channel water from springs in the mountains 17 kilometres away to the city's fountains, public baths and private houses, and was in use until 1973.

Another shot of the Aqueduct in Segovia following my post yesterday. I think this shot provides a better angle showing how big the structure is (28.5m) using the people as a guide.

According to folklore, a young girl tired of walking up the steep city streets to fill her pail with water every morning struck a deal with the devil. In exchange for her soul, he would construct the aqueduct before the cockerel crowed the following morning. However, the devil lost leaving behind the aqueduct

More shots from the lovely town of Segovia and this wonderful aqueduct to follow this week.

Another shot of the Aqueduct in Segovia following my previous posts.

The aqueduct was probably built c. A.D. 50, is still remarkably well preserved.

Its elevated section, with its complete arcade of 167 arches, is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueduct bridges and the foremost symbol of Segovia, as evidenced by its presence on the city's coat of arms.

This interesting octagonal church in white brick is St Lawrence's Church in Rowhedge, in the civil parish of East Donyland, in the Colchester district.

The Old Church of East Donyland was taken down in 1838 when the new Church of St Lawrence was built in the river side community of Rowhedge by William Mason of Ipswich to imitate the Chapter House at York Minster.

Cat on Barrel is probably one of the better known village signs in Norfolk. The original was erected to mark the silver jubilee of King George V, in 1935.

The village sign of Hickling in Norfolk.

Thank you very much to for sending this sign.

The sign depicts what the Augustinian Priory may have once looked like, apparently floating or sinking into Hickling Broad. Actually it was neither, it was good ol’ King Henry VIII who dissolved all such places.

On the post is the priory’s seal and the colourful spandrels is a reed cutter on the left and a peat digger on the right and on the reverse a swallow butterfly and a grey heron.
