the central north east (CNE) tower
think it's fair to say i've been very patient with this one, but the rooftop view and scenery was worth the wait.
originally known as the corporation house, it was built in 1974. standing at 19 storeys and 70.7 metres (232 ft), it is the tallest building in middlesbrough and the wider teeside area.
it originally served as prime office space for multiple companies in the town centre. by 2004, the building was fully let and sold to the kenmore property group, which later went into administration in 2009.
later in the 2010s the tower was purchased for a major refurbishment. it hosted a bowling alley in the lower floors between 2017 and 2022. and in the basement a nightclub operated for several years before closing in june 2023.
the middlesbrough / teesside community have mixed opinions on its future, some would like to see it refurbished into a hotel or an apartment complex, others believe demolition is the only realistic option.
