Great to see the Dilambda at Goodwood, not looking out of place in the paddock next to some very special company. Nearest is Julian Majzub’s gorgeous Maserati 26M - the car which was a catalyst to start his historic tyre business . He struggled to find anyone who made triple stud tyres so he made them himself! Beyond the Dilambda are some stunning Talbot Lago’s - a T23 and T26 SS and Delahaye 135CS and another 135. On the other side are rows of Alfa Romeo Monza’s, Bugatti T35 and T51.
Cars will be wearing the Ukraine Flag in solidarity with the people of Ukraine 🇺🇦

Several period photos show the car racing with 60 and I was delighted to have the help of automotive artist to add these wonderful finishing touches.
Image 2 provided Gabriel with the style inspiration.👌🇮🇹🏁

A very British tradition returns. Today is the 167th edition of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.

Like many I’ve followed it from an early age. And it’s special to have a few pieces of its history at home. Grandfather rowed at 5 for Cambridge. Great grandfather rowed for Oxford at 2, 6 and 7 between 1880 and 1882.

The Lancia Dilambda is nearly ready. Here the gearbox gets a strip and check. A few adjustments before being putting back together and replenishing with some fresh oil.
Apparently what you’re looking at is a semi-dog box gearbox where the 3rd and 4th (to the right) are a ‘dog box’ straight cut. Reverse, 1st and 2nd are helical cut gears. Image 2 shows the neat speedometer mechanism.

First car to stumble upon - a big bruiser of the Gerry Marshall Trophy races - a Bastos Chevolet Camaro Z28. Love the livery. 👌

“Che bello! So, this car is in the Varzi Trophy… Varzi?!”
Sorry, seat’s taken, Tazio … and that helmet is not strictly regulation! You look the part though 😁🇮🇹🏁 .graeme
A quick web search on the racer Achille Varzi brings up a fascinating duel at the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix where Varzi takes pole and holds off the valiant attempts of Tazio Nuvolari to win. It will be fantastic seeing the Italian street racing Dilambda join the grid with the very car - a Bugatti Type 51 - at the Goodwood Member’s Meeting next month.

The Goodwood Road Racing Club ran a club Drive today, with the Royal Automobile Club hosting the initial meet up and Car Display. I think this worked really well - an opportunity to see all the cars and meet some fellow members. Well done to Hannah, Josh and the team.
The Rolls Royce Silver Shadow didn’t miss a beat today, in-fact the engine pulled better as the day went on. You definitely need to use classics and it appreciated the exercise!
The Silver Shadow is not the usual weapon of choice for the enthusiast but it comes highly recommended. A lovely view awaits you across the bonnet, the ride is always cosseting and it surprised how you can hustle the car along the country lanes if you want, just watch the stopping distances - you feel the weight!
A pleasure too to see, whilst on a stop off in Petworth it still gathers the interest of passers-by young and old. People instantly know it is a “special” marque with fine engineering.

A good day! Thrilled and honoured to have an invitation to the 79th Members Meeting with the 1933 Lancia Dilambda 232 racing in the Varzi Trophy, a Franco-Italian spectacular of Grand Prix, Voiturette racers and specials between 1928 and 1935. The Lancia will be joining greats including a Bugatti Type 51 which won the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix driven by Achille Varzi himself.
In the Italian colony of Eritrea, North Africa, this one-off Dilambda was created and raced in period. The Eritrean capital, Asmara, was mainly populated by Italians at this time, with a big street racing and hill climb scene. One of the most well known races was the Coppa di Natale, the Christmas Day Race 1938 with many Alfa Romeo teams attending. A number of racing drivers settled in Asmara including Ermenegildo Strazza, a Lancia and Mille Miglia racer and friend of Vincenzo Lancia. Interestingly with the help of the factory he was running race prototypes mixing chassis and engines, in a constant search for a winning edge. Strazza set up a dealership in Asmara and may have some part to play in the history of this car.
A quick web search of “Dilambda” brings up an enormous and luxurious saloon built for the US market. It illustrates just how much has been changed on this car and close studies of the work shows how skilfully it was done. The structural fuel tank has been narrowed, a good metre length has been removed from the chassis. The bodywork has been hand crafted in steel, hammer marks remain clearly visible on the inside of the rear clamshell. Lancia’s innovative independent sliding pillar front suspension and trick narrow angle and semi-inline 4 litre V8 remain. Not just your “regular” Dilambda V8 as a Lancia collector has confirmed it revs with much more gusto than standard. A boon of the “post vintage” era are 4 speed semi-synchromesh gearbox, which in this car sits proudly at your feet and large hydraulic drumbrakes at each wheel which do come in handy!
Created for the rugged street races and hill climbs of Africa, it will be a pleasure to show the car to the GRRC membership. The car will be in the capable hands of historic specialists . 🙏🇮🇹
