SUPER SATURDAY

Two tours in one day - and chasing each other for a good portion of their respective journeys! We caught Saphos Trains' English Riviera Express and Vintage Trains' Mayflower, both on the return leg, at Cullompton 06.09.25.

5029 Nunney Castle was at the helm of the English Riviera Express and appeared first; followed maybe 5 minutes later by 7029 Clun Castle and 45596 Bahamas double-heading the Mayflower.

SCOTSMAN AT SUNDOWN

Quite the evening at Blue Anchor, 12/07/25, watching 60103 Flying Scotsman run the 18.45 service on the West Somerset Railway! Running an hour behind, we headed off for food and enjoyed the sunset before making a hasty return and catching Scotsman in the dying light.

Moments later the 11-car train (with support from Class 33 D6566) ground to a halt with much whistling and furore - the culprits were, of course, sheep on the line. Only in Somerset...!

Managed to get some close-up time with the loco as the crew cleared the line - job well done. It's been a pleasure to see Flying Scotsman in our neck of the woods again; she soon leaves the Westcountry to head to the Severn Valley Railway.

60103 Flying Scotsman pulls away from Blue Anchor on the West Somerset Railway with the 1500 service to Minehead, 30/06/25. Slide 4 sees the engine at the platform in Minehead.

Lovely to see Flying Scotsman again - in fine form as ever. This is the first time shooting from this spot just beyond Blue Anchor - certainly allows for some dramatic angling.

PRINCE OF THIEVES

Continuing the shots from the West Somerset Railway's Spring Steam Spectacular: Great Western Saint class 2999 'Lady of Legend' (seen here masquerading as 2986 'Robin Hood') is seen arriving into Crowcombe Heathfield with a short passenger service to Minehead.

Also featuring recently overhauled GWR coach no. 6705 - making for a short train but a classic Great Western scene (and therefore a must-see for me!)

JUBILEE IN THE WEST

Ex-LMS 45596 Bahamas is seen here coasting into Crowcombe Heathfield, bringing the late morning service from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard to a stop during the West Somerset Railway's Spring Steam Spectacular. Seen on Monday 5th May 2025.

MOGUL AT MINEHEAD

The West Somerset Railway's own Mogul 9351 is seen here at Minehead running around its train, having arrived with the very first service of the WSR season.

An extremely busy day; good to see the railway is full force!

THE AUTO TANK RETURNS

Fresh from overhaul and looking smart, ex-GWR tank engine 1450 was the star at the Avon Valley Railway Official's end of season gala (pictured 3.11.24). Coupled with Autocoach 232, we were treated to a quintessential GWR branchline service during the day.

This was a big one for me on a few levels: I grew up on what used to be the Exe Valley Railway, primarily serviced by 1400s and auto-trains like this - in fact, 1450 spent some of its working life serving the branch. A real highlight on a grey November day.

ATLANTIC COAST EXPRESS

Rebuilt Merchant Navy 35028 Clan Line paid a visit to Exeter and Devon, hauling the Atlantic Coast Express on behalf of The Railway Touring Company, 12.10.24. Seen arriving and departing from Exeter St David's, taking on coal and water in Exeter New Yard, and at speed on the return journey towards Taunton and beyond.

A first for me seeing a MN on the mainline. A very evocative sight seeing a Southern engine on (some) Southern rails, hauling the famous Southern express - there have been worse afternoons!

DOUBLE CASTLES

A rare and mighty sight as 7029 'Clun Castle' and 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgecumbe' lead Vintage Trains 'The Mayflower', 27.09.24. One Castle is a treat in and of itself, but two was really something - you could hear them for miles before they made their appearance.

Photos from Whiteball Bank, Dawlish, and (an attempt) at Exeter St Davids - ready to capture a dramatic departure, only to be blocked by an incoming mainline service. A varied day of photography, but an excellent experience and one I'll remember for a while now.
