Apologies if you're already fed up with seeing other peoples' aurora photos on facebook, but here's one of mine seen last night from the Greenhillstairs road, looking north and high above the M74, the lights from the cars and lorries trailing around the bend in the motorway during the 6 second photo exposure time.

Hello :-) My first FB post of 2024 features a new picture, and I hope that this one appeals not just to those who know the Outer Hebrides, but to some who simply like the sea, castles, islands, mountains, boats, and colourful interpretations of landscapes. This picture is of Castlebay on the island of Barra, the main landmass in the southernmost of the Western Isles. Barra is a 5 hour trip by ferry from Oban to Castlebay, and as far an inhabited place from the Scottish mainland as anywhere else bar Shetland. The hill rising behind Castlebay is called Heaval, and despite being just a few hundred metres high, it simply towers over the town. And in real life, many or most of the buildings are greywashed by the wind, rain and sun, but I had always intended the houses in my picture to have the look of the toy wooden painted houses you might find in a child's toybox, so I hope I pulled that off.

Anyhow, it'll see its first appearance in the outside world at Carlisle Farmers' Market on Saturday, and Dumfries Farmers' Market on Sunday.

It's not quite midsummer, but the sun will be setting in a minute or two over Moffat. Enjoying a pint of Five Kingdoms Brewery 'Heart of Darkness', a rather tasty stout, conditioned in whisky barrels. Ain't summer brilliant :-)

It's turned into a real 'Flaming June', so it's going to be proper warm this Saturday in Dumfries town centre at the Makers Market, and again on Sunday in Moffat at the farmers' market. Lots of new food and drink producers, artists and crafters to meet, try and if you like, to buy :-)

I took this photo back in 2017, and the mural was on the junction of Nicholson Street in Annan with Port Street, the road that goes down to the harbour wharf. I could never have guessed that six years later, I'd be joining Annan's inaugural farmers' and producers' market tomorrow at the harbourside where the road in my picture leads to.

So anyhoo, it's another double-market weekend for me. Annan at the harbour in Port Street tomorrow between 10 am and 2.30 pm, and Castle Douglas at Market Hill on Sunday, also 10 am to 2.30 pm.

And the weather promises to be fine :-)

A full weekend coming up :-) Weather forecast is for sunshine and seagulls over my gazebo at Dumfries Makers Market tomorrow, and who knows (but with crows) at Moffat Farmers' Market on Sunday. They're both lovely markets and I'm really looking forward to them both.

Created by Max at Steilhead Cider

This is slightly tangential to the usual cider nonsense I put on here, but look at this what I made! You can poke your face through and feel like a King or a Queen for a while when you visit Dumfries Farmers' Market on Sunday, maybe get someone to take your photo, too. Couple of nice bottles of Bullfinch old C Rex has got there, I wonder if the bloke that puts the toothpaste on Charles' toothbrush will have to take the caps off for him?

And please do come and use it, it took me two days to paint the bloody thing!!!

It may look like one of those AI generated images with text input to the robot that goes something like "do me a picture of a Scotch Pie underneath a castle in the mist", but no, it's actually a real photo of a real pie under a real castle in Edinburgh, made by Annan Water, who are real farmers and pie makers who'll be with me and thirty or so others at Kirkcudbright Farmers' Market this Sunday.
