Bow Fiddle Rock in monochrome.

Stripped of colour, the coastline becomes pure structure — rock, tide, gravity, time. The long exposure pulls movement through the frame, carving white arcs through the darker mass of stone, while the sea stack stands fixed and indifferent on the horizon.

Black and white feels right here. It emphasises texture over tone, form over atmosphere. The geology takes centre stage — fractured, weathered, and unyielding — while the water performs its constant, cyclical negotiation around it.

There’s something honest about reducing a scene like this to light and shadow. No distraction. Just contrast, motion, and permanence sharing the same space.

Portknockie, Moray.

The Milky Way lifting into a sky already brushed with a quiet aurora glow. No dramatic curtains — just a restrained band of green and magenta holding the horizon, subtle but unmistakable.

The sea rendered still through long exposure. The rock fixed and unyielding. And above it all, a reminder of scale that’s hard to process when you’re standing alone on the edge of the land.

These images are as much about patience as they are about technique. Waiting for alignment. Trusting the forecast. Letting the sky unfold on its own terms.

Early morning along the River Eden, Bitts Park.
Low mist drifting across the grass, autumn colour holding in the trees, and that brief window where the light feels suspended rather than directional. Moments like this never last long — the sun climbs, the mist thins, and the scene quietly resets.

What draws me back here again and again is the restraint of it all. Nothing dramatic, nothing forced.

Early morning at the tarn, before the day properly begins.
Mist lifting from the water, frost still clinging to the fields, and a small group of swans moving quietly through the haze. Nothing hurried, nothing staged — just the landscape easing itself awake.

Scenes like this reward stillness. A locked-off frame, a steady tripod, and the patience to let the moment unfold rather than forcing it. The swans drifted through almost unnoticed, briefly punctuating the calm before dissolving back into the mist.

This is slow, deliberate photography — made to be lived with, not scrolled past.

Bow Fiddle Rock carved by time, tide, and weather.
A reminder that geology works on a different clock — patient, indifferent, precise.

Beneath moody skies, the sea moves without urgency, returning again and again. No single tide shapes this place; it is persistence, not drama, that does the work.

Near the village of Portknockie, on the Moray coast, where land and sea remain in long negotiation.

Captured as a long exposure to slow the water and echo that timescale — motion softened, structure held.

There are moments when the landscape feels briefly animated, as if the sky is no longer a backdrop but an active participant.
Above Lochranza Castle, bands of auroral light shifted and re-formed in real time — solar energy translated into colour, motion, and silence. The ruins stood unchanged, anchoring the scene while the atmosphere performed overhead.

Captured on the evening of 10th October 2024, this was less about spectacle and more about alignment: latitude, darkness, weather, and patience converging for a short window before the night returned to stillness.

Built for defence, shaped by siege, and left to time, Caerlaverock Castle has stood enclosed by its moat for more than seven centuries.

On this night, the water lies still, reflecting starlight rather than conflict, as the Milky Way drifts overhead — medieval history below, deep time above, and a brief human pause in between.

A Brief Last Moment of Golden Hour ✨🖤

After a lively shoot with her dogs Bruce and Marney, Lilly stepped into the soft parting light — and this quiet portrait came to life. Captured for her mum Claire, it was a spontaneous moment that carried more weight than many planned frames.

I’ve been leaning more into people portrait sessions lately — especially those that emerge naturally from a shared experience, like this one. It’s not just about posing; it’s about light, emotion, and a little trust.

If you’d love to have your own relaxed, natural portrait session — either solo or alongside your dogs — feel free to get in touch.

The White Belt of the Gelt 🖤💦🌿

Taken in Gelt Woods, just outside Brampton, this scene shows a narrow run of the River Gelt slicing through layered sandstone — a pale, flowing belt against the darker tones of the surrounding forest.

By stripping the colour away, the image becomes more about contrast and form: the texture of the rock, the sheen of the water, and the way light catches the ferns and branches above.

I’ve always felt that monochrome images have a different kind of storytelling power — they strip away distractions and leave only shape, light, and texture. How do you feel about black and white photography? Does it speak to you more or less than colour?

Sea of Clouds over Haweswater 🌄☁️✨

From deep in the archives — this image was taken on May 13th, 2023, looking across Blea Tarn toward Haweswater, which on this morning was swallowed entirely by a cloud inversion. The rising sun spilled warm light over the High Street fells, casting long shadows and igniting the fog from within.

A moment like this makes the early hike worth every step. The tarn still as glass — and for a brief time, it felt like standing on an island above the sky itself.

This final image is a panorama composed of 6 vertical frames, stitched to preserve both the grandeur of the scene and the intricate detail across the ridges and reflection.
