Carnival Atmosphere!

Alexandra Palace played host to the usual organised-chaos of the Red Bull Soapbox Race! 52 teams competed with their mad-cap contraptions, to score not just a fast time down the hill, but collect points on their designs, and a 20 second performance. Some 17,500 lined the course enjoying the Great British carnival atmosphere!

The Flycatchers Return!

After spending the winter in either Africa or south western Asia, the Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa Striata) is one of our later migratory birds. Our eyes, up at Batsford Arboretum & Garden Centre, have been on the look out for these rather overlooked birds for a few weeks and today they have begun to occupy the nest boxes along the Victorian Walled Garden.

Redstarts!

A lovely evening spent photographing a pair of nesting Common Redstarts (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) at Batsford Arboretum. It also happens to be my place of work, where just a few weeks ago my boss first noticed the pair sitting on the wire deer fence. After watering the nursery area, I wondered down after hours into a very peaceful Arboretum, and with a bucket full of patience I finally found the nest. It is a good 15+ meters up a large veteran oak tree, so even at 700mm it was a challenge to say the least. With help from my new SpeediGimbal attachment for my monopod, it helped keep things steady to captured these rather colourful birds in the evening light. Wonderful to see and not such a common sight around these parts.

The Brailes 3 Hills Walk

The annual tradition of walking the three main hills surrounding my home village of Brailes, took place back in its traditional May bank Holiday Monday slot. Starting off at the playing field, the first hill is steeped in rural Warwickshire history, with the old Norman motte and bailey of Castle Hill, followed swiftly by Brailes Hill. The walk then concludes after crossing over Mine Hill, completing the just over 6 mile loop. Conditions were mild, however unfortunately the low cloud put pay to any sunshine making an appearance.
