Here is a short video of one of the egrets fishing yesterday. Pleasing to see the egret also allows the 5 second rule and manages to catch it after dropping it in the water 😂

As you've probably noticed from my latest posts, I'm kind of obsessed with the kingfishers right now. Over the next week or two, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the young will appear so I can watch them in their first few days outside of their nest. I love watching the young learn from the adults and their first attempts at diving and catching fish.

In the meantime, other wildlife has passed me by and I've managed to capture some of it on camera too. Herons, Sparrowhawks, mink, buzzards, dippers, wagtail to name but a few.

Last night I was joined by two egrets who slowly made their way towards me. Walking methodically along the river hunting for fish. What stood out was the size of the fish they caught, the kingfisher clearly knows where and how to get bigger fish. Maybe the egrets could take lessons! 😊

Sorry for all the kingfisher photos lately, I'll be spending a little more time up and down rivers looking and watching over the next few weeks. The pair I've found up on the River Coquet seem to be very busy feeding so young should appear soon, fingers crossed! 🤞

Unfortunately, a pair close to me that I've been watching for several years have moved on, possibly due to building work that has been going on 😢. I'm grateful to have found another pair this year not far from home to watch and enjoy their journey 😊

This time, the male came out with a huge fish to take back. I watched it for a good five minutes flip, twist and bash it until eventually it was the right way up for him to fly off with it 😊

My 8 year old daughter asked if I could take her to see the kingfisher that I'm always out looking for. So off we went on Saturday morning full of hope and optimism. I did try and explain that we may have to sit there a long time and not see anything.

We packed a couple of books for the quiet times but within ten minutes, the unmistakable squeak of the kingfisher was heard. We couldn't believe our luck! She grabbed the camera, pointed and clicked away.

For the next hour or so, the male came and went with plenty of fish. We also saw a dipper, robin and a dancing wagtail. These are all taken by my daughter and I couldn't be more proud.

Such an awesome morning ❤️

A short clip of the male kingfisher from the other day. It was a hot day and after providing fish to the female and potential babies, the male needed to cool down. Diving not for fish but to preen and take a moment between the constant feeding routine.

I don't normally take video but I wanted to just record this behaviour and learn more about these beautiful birds that I've been watching over the past few years.

This time round at the river it was all about the male kingfisher (and a very brief glimpse of the female at the end).

He flew past me a few times and occasionally stopped near me to preen. Diving in the water this time not to fish but to cool off and clean his feathers.

It's great to find new locations to sit and watch the wildlife and I think this one might turn out just fine 😉

Down on the river at the weekend and this beautiful juvenile male kingfisher was learning how to fish right in front of me.

From observing the adults nesting over the last several months, I think this young one may be hanging around from the pairs first brood a little while ago. I'm hoping they were successful and have another group of young appearing over the next week or so.

It's always an absolute privilege to watch the adults teach their young how to fish. It's even more special when you see the young actually dive in and come up with their own fish for the first time. I have seen the juveniles dive and come up with small rocks before but practice makes perfect! 😊

Fingers crossed I get lucky this year too! 🤞

Busy little dippers down on the river from a short while ago. I sat and watched this pair gather material for their nest under the bridge and back and forth so many times.

These photos are from a few weeks ago so hopefully, the young will be making their appearance into the world very soon.

I always keep an eye on them when I go as they are so funny to watch, bobbing up and down and then diving head first into the running water looking for food.

I spent a good few hours waiting and hoping then eventually out it came, followed by several more a little later on when the light had faded.

Such a thrill to see these locals coming out and foraging and playing around with each other, they have so much character!

Friday's storms were pretty epic! ⚡ ⛈️

I had been watching the lightning strike map just before finishing work and I knew it was tracking roughly towards Amble. I drove through the absolutely torrential rain to try and get through the other side and slightly ahead of it.

Howick wasn't my first choice but I'm glad I went. Standing getting absolutely soaked, it was so worth it!
