When you book a milestone session for your baby, it doesn’t have to be just photos of them on their own.

I’m always happy to get a few family photographs too, whether that’s baby with mum, baby with dad, or all of you together. It’s such a good opportunity, because you’re already there, baby is dressed and ready, and everyone has made it out of the house which, with a little one, is not always a small achievement.

Milestone sessions are perfect for capturing all the changes after the newborn stage. The expressions, the eye contact, the sitting, standing or whatever new skill they’re currently very proud of.

But having you in some of the images matters too. It shows their size, their connection with you, and what this stage really looked like for your family.

If your baby is due an updated session, send me a message and we can chat about what you’d like included.

Dad photos are always worth including in a newborn session.

They don’t need to be complicated. A simple, well-lit portrait with baby tucked safely into your arms can be one of the strongest images from the whole gallery.

Newborn sessions aren’t only about photographs of baby on their own. Parent images help show just how small they were, and they give you something that feels more complete when you look back at this stage.

If you’re not especially comfortable being photographed, that’s okay too. These photos are kept simple and guided, so you don’t have to overthink it.

You might book the session for your baby, but it’s often the images with you in them that become the ones you come back to most.

Partner photos can be included in maternity sessions too, and they don’t need to feel overly posed.

A lot of couples feel a bit unsure in front of the camera at first, especially if they’re not used to having professional photos taken together. That’s fine. I will tell you want to do, so you’re not left standing there wondering what happens with your hands or where to look.

Outdoor maternity sessions work really well for this because there’s more space to move, and the finished images can feel relaxed while still looking polished. The beach gives a soft, simple backdrop without taking the attention away from you.

If you’d like your maternity session to include your partner, we can plan that into the shoot and keep it feeling natural.

Pregnancy can be photographed in so many different ways, and this is a good example of something a little more polished and portrait-led.

A studio maternity session gives us control over the light, styling and overall feel of the images, which works beautifully if you want something clean, elegant and a bit more refined.

Black and white gives the image a more classic finish, while colour keeps the warmth and softness of the styling. Both work beautifully, which is why having a varied gallery is so useful when it comes to choosing your favourites.

If you’re expecting and would like maternity photographs that feel stylish but still natural, get in touch and we can chat through what would suit you.

Outdoor family sessions are a great choice if you want photographs that feel relaxed but still look beautifully put together.

Being outside gives everyone a bit more room, which can make the whole session feel easier, especially with children. You’re not trying to keep everyone perfectly still. It’s more about good light, a great setting, and natural connection, with enough direction to keep everything looking polished.

Locations can make such a difference too. A beach, open space or place you already love can give the images a completely different feel from a studio session.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos and want something natural, stylish and unfussy, outdoor sessions work so well.

There’s a stage between newborn and toddler where babies seem to change every week.

They’re more expressive, more curious, more determined, and suddenly they’re standing, balancing, reaching for you, and looking much less like the tiny newborn you brought home. It’s such a good age to photograph because there’s so much personality coming through.

I love milestone images like this because they still feel very much about baby, but they also include that little bit of connection with mum and dad. Just a pair of hands in the frame can say a lot.

If your baby is at that in between stage, this is a really nice time to update your photos.

When families book a session, I always think it’s important to make space for individual portraits of the children as well.

Those images often become the unexpected favourites. They show personality, confidence and all those little things that are so recognisable at this age. Not forced smiles or stiff posing, just a really good portrait of them as they are now.

Outdoor sessions work especially well for this because children tend to relax more easily when they’ve got room to move and the session doesn’t feel too formal.

Family photos are important, of course, but so are the individual ones.

Outdoor maternity sessions have a very different feel from studio portraits, and that’s exactly why some clients love them.

There’s a softness to being by the water, more space to move, and a slightly less formal feel, while still creating images that look polished and beautifully finished. They can feel strong and understated at the same time, which works especially well for maternity.

If you’re drawn to natural light and open spaces, an outdoor session can be a really good option. It still feels considered and professional, just with a different atmosphere.

This style of maternity photography is ideal if you want something elegant without it feeling too staged.

There’s a lot to be said for keeping newborn portraits simple.

When the styling is understated, all the attention stays exactly where it should be, on your baby. Their features, their expression, the tiny details that change so quickly in those first few weeks.

Not every newborn image needs props or elaborate setups to feel special. Some of the most timeless photographs are the quiet, close up ones that just show your baby exactly as they are.

Newborn sessions are always led around baby, with time built in for feeding, settling and cuddles, so nothing feels rushed.
