‘Whitley Bay Up and Over’

The Up & Over

On this platform, years ago,
the crowds would gather, row by row,
beneath the glass and iron frame,
while Whitley Bay was all aflame.

A seaside day was drawing through,
with salty air and skies of blue,
and footsteps echoed, voices loud,
as homeward trains drew in the crowd.

The Up and Over: this was the place
where holiday-makers slowed their pace;
for Longbenton, Jesmond; homeward bound,
with chatter and laughter all around.

Coats were carried, children ran,
and tired feet stood where they can,
while another Metro came to take
the crowds from sea, the sand, the break.

Now silence settles on the scene,
where once the platform bustled keen;
but look closely and you might just see
the ghosts of crowds that used to be.

For beneath this roof, the years remain;
in footsteps, voices, sun and rain.
And every train that passes through
still carries whispers of the queue.

‘Boulevard/Westmorland Road’

Westmorland Road, it’s chocka tonight,
Red lights glow and headlights bite.
Traffic crawls, but the city flies,
With streaks of light beneath the skies.

Past Central Station, the sirens scream,
A fire engine flashes through the scene.
Past Centre for Life, the crowds weave through,
“Wey, gan on then!”; there’s work to do.

A blur of buses, a flash of red,
Folk gannin’ places, dreams in their heads.
That’s Newcastle; loud, fast and bright,
Still gannin’ strong into the night.

‘Summertime in the City’

Summer settles on the Toon,
blue skies above the Tyne,
the Millennium Bridge catching light,
and folk with nowhere else to be,
just enjoying summertime.

The Quayside fills with colour,
the river carries on,
while the Tyne Bridge wears its scaffolding,
waiting patiently for the day
its restoration is done.

There were Pride flags down the streets,
rainbows bright against the grey,
Newcastle celebrating loudly
through another Northern summer day.

Then came NOVUM, turning the city
into one enormous playground,
with art, events and crowds
bringing the centre alive
as summer rolled around.

The Metro had its moments too;
new trains, old problems,
lines closed for improvement,
and replacement buses
keeping Newcastle moving.

The football headlines kept coming,
as St James’ watched another summer
of transfers, rumours and millions;
the Toon dreaming once again
of what might happen next.

And when the sunshine arrived,
the North East felt the heat,
with Newcastle basking beneath the skies
and everyone suddenly remembering
that summer here is rather sweet.

From the Quayside to the Bigg Market,
from Central to the Coast,
Newcastle carried on regardless;
a city changing, celebrating,
arguing, laughing,
and never standing still.

‘Civic Sunset’

The Friday sun slips slowly low,
Painting Newcastle in amber glow.
The Civic stands as the city slows,
While evening settles and daylight goes.

The working week has had its say,
And tired footsteps drift away.
Traffic hums, then fades from sight,
Leaving ribbons of red and white.

The offices dim, the streets unwind,
A weekend waits just down the line.
And beneath the towers, warm and bright,
Newcastle breathes into Friday night.

One final glow upon the stone,
A city clocking out, alone;
Tomorrow brings another scene,
But tonight, the Civic rests serene.

‘Tyne Bridge Refurb’

She’s stood ower the Tyne for years, man,
Through rain, wind, frost and shine,
A proper Geordie lass, she’s been,
Watchin’ Newcastle bide its time.

Now she’s gettin’ a bit of TLC,
So divvent worry; she’ll be canny, pet,
A lick o’ paint, some brand-new steel,
And she’ll be back to her best yet.

She’s seen the toon come and gan,
Heard “Howay!” from morn till night,
And when those scaffolds finally gan,
She’ll be standin’ proud; champion, alreet!

So here’s to the old girl, strong as owt,
A Geordie heart beneath her frame,
The Tyne Bridge might be getting fixed,
But she’ll always stay the same.

'Westmorland Road, Newcastle'

Westmorland Road has had quite the glow-up. Once cattle were the main attraction, followed by buses and coaches at Marlborough Crescent, the area eventually got a serious makeover.

In 2000, the Centre for Life opened on the old cattle market and bus station site; swapping livestock and Leyland buses for science, space and a giant DNA-shaped symbol of Newcastle’s future.

But after dark, Westmorland Road found another calling, becoming part of the city’s famous Pink Triangle, with bars, clubs and LGBTQ+ nightlife bringing a whole new crowd to the street.

From cattle to coaches to cocktails: Westmorland Road has always known how to keep things moving.

‘The Bank’

Standing at 12–14 Scotswood Road, the building was once home to Lloyds Bank’s Cattle Market branch, with No. 14 known as Lloyds Bank Chambers.

For generations, Newcastle customers walked through its doors to deposit their money, cash their cheques and conduct the everyday business of banking.

Then, sometime around the late 1990s, the building began a rather more colourful second life.

The bank became The Bank: transforming from a place of finance into one of Newcastle’s LGBTQ+ venues and becoming part of the city’s famous Pink Triangle.

The old banking surroundings remained, creating one of the city’s more unusual nightlife settings: oak, marble and echoes of its financial past alongside drag, cabaret, karaoke, cocktails and plenty of Geordie characters.

'Catching the Tide'

One man.
One board.
One endless sea.

At Longsands,
the world falls quiet;
just the rush of the wave
and the pull of the tide.

For a moment,
he belongs to neither land nor sea,
but somewhere in between.

‘County Hotel’

Beneath a cobalt evening sky,
The County Hotel stands proud and bright,
While passing cars become ribbons of gold,
Painting the streets with trails of light.

The city pauses, then moves once more,
Neon flickers, traffic flows,
And every window, every street
Has a story only darkness knows.

A moment captured, frozen in time,
Where old stone meets the modern glow;
Newcastle after the sun goes down,
A city with nowhere else to go.

'Dolly Parton'

If I should stay
Well I would only be in your way
And so I'll go, and yet I know
I'll think of you each step of the way
And I will always love you
I will always love you
Bitter-sweet memories
That's all I'm taking with me
Good-bye, please don't cry
'Cause we both know that I'm not
What you need
But I will always love you
I will always love you
And I hope life, will treat you kind
And I hope that you have all
That you ever dreamed of
Oh I do wish you joy
And I wish you happiness
But above all this
I wish you love
I love you
I will always love you
I, I will always, always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
