A castle atop a wild wild beach, windswept battlements and Grand architecture. The setting for many films and the inspiration behind many fantastical stories. And it’s here Northumberland. For couples choosing to marry here, I believe you are choosing the most stunning location in England.

And it’s for all these reason Jake and Alice chose Bamburgh for their wedding day. Childhood sweethearts, they were surrounded by friends and family who had known them from early school days, and what a celebration they had. With pizza and sensational musician Sam bring all the good vibes tunes into the night.

A wedding should look like the people who are in it. And for Becca and Charlie, a Star Wars character for every guest was a brilliant talking point for the feast that followed….

“I’m Lando Calrissian, who are you?”
“Charlie thinks I look like C-3PO”
“You’d have thought the bride would be Princess Leah… but Chebakka?”

You can ditch the pretty to do things so much more personally! It took groom Charlie, many many hours of STAR WARS LEGO FUN to honour their guests this way.

The seating plan took quite a lot of concentration, awe as every generation of guests gathering around to find themselves.

And that’s the good stuff.

The things your friends bring. The in-jokes. The slightly eccentric ideas that make perfect sense to your people. A room full of conversations, raised glasses and everyone you love temporarily gathered in one place.

Beautiful weddings don’t have to be terribly serious. The humour honours the life long friendships, and that in itself is beautiful.

// ON BEING GEN X //

Today, I’m 56.

As a Gen X wedding photographer working with a new generation of couples, I’ve occasionally wondered whether my age is something I should make less visible.

I’ve decided the opposite.

My years have given me perspective. They’ve taught me how to read a room, recognise complicated family dynamics and remain steady when plans change or emotions rise.

They’ve also taught me that the significance of a photograph rarely ends on the wedding day. It grows as people change, families evolve and time moves on.

None of that makes curiosity less important. I’m still learning, questioning and responding to new ways of celebrating. Gen Z may be rewriting parts of the wedding rulebook—and I’m very glad they are.

I don’t need to belong to the same generation as my couples to understand them. I need to listen carefully, remain curious and know how to translate who they are into photographs that will continue to matter.

So here I am: 56, still curious and still unfurling.

If you want both, make space for both in your wedding timeline.

This portrait needed a little time—to notice the light, arrange the dress and create something intentional away from the businesses of bridal preparations. (And to get Lucy up into the window!) The confetti photograph beside it was allowed to unfold naturally.

You don’t need to turn your wedding into a photoshoot. Two short portrait windows can be enough: perhaps 15 minutes after the ceremony and another 10 minutes later, when the light changes.

The result is a wedding gallery that holds both sides of the day: everything that happened without direction, alongside a handful of beautifully composed portraits created with purpose.

Both belong in the story.

THE HILLS

They did the legal bit in the morning. A swift 15 minute registry office:vows and marriage certificate. Then back to the beautiful Edenhall Estate | Accommodation & Wedding Venue Cumbria to take their breaths and prepare for their elopement ceremony in the hills.

Then they headed into the mountains via a Picnic on Lake Ullswater for the ceremony that truly reflected them: Fells overlooking the Lake District and North Yorkshire.

Under the current law in England and Wales, couples can complete the legal formalities at a register office before holding a personal, celebrant-led ceremony somewhere altogether more meaningful.

For these two, that meant gathering in the Lake District—with open skies, mountains around them and the freedom to shape the ceremony in their own way.

WEDDING LAW REFORM
Proposed changes to wedding law could eventually give couples even greater freedom over where and how they legally marry. For couples dreaming of an outdoor wedding in Northumberland, the Lakes or somewhere wild and beautiful, that could change everything.
