Excalibur, the ancient and magical sword of Arthur, the Once and Future King, rose from its resting place in the depths of Dozmary Pool on Bodmin Moor last night after a 1500 year absence.

Local folklore expert Denzil Pascoe said that the appearance of the sword is a "... sure sign of the imminent return of the dark age leader to rid the Cornish people of their foes".

Cornwall Council leaders were said to be drawing up plans to have contractors toss the sword back into the pool to delay Arthur's arrival so as not to unsettle tourists during the all important summer holiday season.

A huge alien head stone carving was uncovered at low tide on Porth beach today. Archaeologists were brought in to examine it and in light of the patterns of weathering estimated it was over 12,000 years old, placing it in the The Younger Dryas stadial.

However, local surfers complained bitterly that not only did they have to avoid rainy days due to combined sewage outflows spilling onto the beach, but now had to also avoid this huge obstacle making it almost impossible to surf there except at high tide on a super moon.

Serious point (no, really):

Most witches are beautiful folk and I want to acknowledge that they have been horribly and needlessly persecuted throughout the ages, mostly by men. As an aside, Lucy Worsley did a great BBC programme on the witch trials available on iPlayer which is well worth a viewing.

However ... this is Cornish Gothic and we only deal with the dark side. Yung's 'Great Mother' archetype is the force that both drives creation, but also that which (no pun intended) can destroy it. A Ying to every Yang as it were.

All that being said, I think that this fine lady fits the 'wicked witch' archetype very nicely indeed.

If you go down to the woods today ... actually, on second thoughts, I might give it a miss.

The legendary 'Elephant Tree' of Pendarves Wood.

I have it on good authority from Camborne Satanists Youth Club that if you run around the tree backwards 7 times starting at the stroke of midnight on the full Snow Moon whilst necking a litre of Spingo ale at the same time, a real-life elephant will appear. No bs.
