Poya, a very important religious holiday in Sri Lanka, celebrated every time a full moon appears. As 70% of Sri Lanka’s are Buddhist, Poya is celebrated by almost all Sri Lankans, However the intention of this day is to bring everyone together and celebrate life to the fullest. So with that being said this day is technically open to anyone, I mean, I attended this day and I am not Buddhist at all, which did not stop me from smiling during this vibrant, coruscating event.
The name Poya derives from the Lunar monthly Buddhist holiday of Uposatha, ‘Uposatha’ meaning ‘entering to stay’. Which can be viewed two ways in my opinion, am I entering to stay for the event, or entering to stay as a Buddhist? The answer is most likely the latter, nevertheless I can respect the wholesomeness of this event, and most of all the multiple efforts that go into making it possible.
We all experience new things in life, and this was one of those for me, a real eye opener into how other parts of the world live their lives. Here’s to many more of these new moments!
