Our local young buck has found himself a girlfriend 🦌❤️ they are bedding down together in the wildflowers in front of every single night 🌙

OPERATION NO-FLY ZONE

🦅 A buzzard drifting in from the north triggered an immediate intercept over Stanta. At first it seemed content to angle away, ignoring the crows' relentless harassment. Eventually, its patience ran out and a brief but lively mid-air 'dogfight' ensued.

🪖 A reminder that even over a military wilderness, the local airforce takes a dim view of unauthorised incursions into its airspace.

STANTA: Requisitioned in 1942 for D-day training. Closed to the public ever since. Stanta has become one of the UKs most significant and protected wildlife habitats. 🦌

🍊 ORIOLES & ORANGES

Huge excitement this week at .

Merlin suggested Golden Oriole. Now before everyone falls off their perches, that would be extraordinarily unlikely. Golden Orioles no longer breed in the UK and are only a very scarce visitor, so the odds of Merlin being right on this occasion are tiny.

That said our hide visitor also caught a flash of vivid-golden orange. Was it a trick of the light? A more familiar species at a different angle? Or something a little more unusual?

Whatever it was, it's moments like these that make time in the hide here on the Stanta edge so exciting.

Did you know that although ragwort is a lethal w**d to livestock, for the Cinnibar moth it's a life-giving necessity. The secret lies in the females choice: she uses sensory organs to detect the concentration level of the toxin in each plant. If the concentration isn't right she'll move on. 26C. 45% humidity. Wind 24 km/h

🐦 The dawn chorus has long since faded. The roe deer, observed grooming at first light retreated to the woodland as the heat rose quickly. Only the flora remains highly active: daisies and sage hum with bees 🐝 while the first poppies fragile and paper thin, clutch at the wild margins, holding firm against the gusts.

I have spent the day topping up the rainwater fed ponds, placing planks in and out for all creatures. I really hope the Mallard and her solitary duckling who were observed trekking the margins earlier found the water.

Stewardship of Wild Lands Norfolk is a constant and privileged duty, but in this heat, it takes on a sharper urgency.

Its quiet now but I expect the evening to be loud with the return of the life currently sheltering from the glare.

Did you know the Mistle thrush is one of the few birds that will actively stand its ground against a sparrowhawk like the one here at Wild Lands?

While other species flee the mistle thrush uses a rare tactical mimicry to cause sensory confusion and to guard its food source. By tracking the hawk through the land and stripping away its element of surprise, the mistle thrush creates a pocket of safety for the other birds that call Wild Lands home.

THE ROE DEER'S COMPASS

Did you know that Roe deer are masters of magnetic alignment? They carry microscopic magnetic crystals in their skulls that act like a built in GPS!

During the rut, their bodies instinctively orient to the Earth's magnetic axis. They run round and wear the same path into the ground over and over until a rutting circle forms like this one formed directly in front of the hide here at Wild Lands. 🦌
