Of all the places I’ve stayed while running workshops, I think I’ve only ever photographed three of them.

Most of the time, we barely see the accommodation at all. We’re usually leaving way before sunrise and getting back long after sunset, so it often just becomes somewhere to sleep.

But every now and then, a place really stands out.

This is Tullochwood Lodges, just outside Forres in Morayshire, where we stayed in 2 of the lodges last year.

This was taken at dawn on departure day. Heavy rain had rolled in the evening before, so any bonus sunrise shoot was pretty much going to be a washout. Rather than hanging around in the rain, we decided to get a head start on the 12 hour drive home.

What an amazing spot though.

You’re about 20 minutes from the coast, around 45 minutes from the Cairngorms, with Inverness not too far away either. You’ve also got places like Bow Fiddle Rock around 45 minutes away, Glen Affric about two hours away, RAF Lossiemouth about 15 minutes away for aviation photography, loads of shopping nearby, and plenty of distilleries to explore as well.

There’s just so much to see and photograph in every direction, and the whole area is absolutely stunning.

Thinking about it, the three places I’ve photographed have all been in Scotland too. Two from the northwest of Scotland, and this one from Moray.

All properly epic in their own way.

So if you’re ever looking for somewhere really lovely, well placed and affordable to stay in this part of Scotland, give Tullochwood Lodges a look. It’s a really, really nice place.

Back on the editing train, this was taken last October at Randolph's Leap, a narrow slot gorge on the River Findhorn, in Morayshire.

Again, this is a location I have lost count of how many times I have visited over the years, mostly as a teen, when we used to cycle here for a bit of a swim and a few funny nights camping. as it was only an hour away.
Every other time I have visited with camera gear, its been too windy for drones, so I was very pleased to be able to get a few flights in this time.

The sound and feeling through the ground of the water cascading through reminds you of how powerfull nature can be, with the large log perched on the rocks below where I am stood in my bright coat. I believe the log was deposited there during some recent floods.

I used a 10 stop ND filter on the DJI mini 4 pro to get a few seconds exposure time.

Really looking forward to my next trip to Scotland in October.

Assynt is an area I’ve been visiting for over 30 years. For the first couple of decades, it was all about exploring the mountains and bagging Munros back in the 90s, occasionally with a disposable camera.
Over the last 10 years, though, my focus has shifted more towards photography.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about which area I enjoy photographing the most but don’t get to visit often enough. After plenty of reflection, I’m confident that the mountains and coastline of this magical part of Scotland win hands down. The only downside is that it’s over 600 miles away!

Do you have a favourite place that you love but don’t get to visit as often as you’d like? If so, drop a photo in the comments — I’d love to see it.

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!

Whilst up in Scotland last year, we were about to head over the Dava Moor when we made a quick stop at the Divie Viaduct.

Most of the day had been a complete washout, with heavy rain in the morning and light winds that slowly faded as the day went on. It meant we had to get a bit creative with locations, but luckily we happened to pass this magnificent piece of Victorian architecture.

I actually remembered abseiling off here with friends when I was in my teens. We had such a laugh and camped nearby, so I knew that with the autumn colours, even on a horribly grey day, there was a good chance we could still come away with a shot.

The group had the drones up in no time, and with a bit of constant communication between us all, we managed to grab some shots during the 10-minute dry spell we were treated to.

This looks like a fantastic session, I would liked to have attended it myself, but I am with a private group on the Norfolk coast.

Nik effects is a slick bit of software, think it was around 2013 I started to use it for the sharpening tool, and dare I say it HDR with those sliders maybe pushed a bit to far when I look back at some of those images off the abandoned buildings 🙈

One from September last year. We’d headed out for sunrise, but the conditions weren’t great, so we decided on a quick shoot at Walcott while waiting for the café to open for a cooked breakfast.

The tide was on its way out, which is always a great time to capture the water flowing through the sea defences.

Been looking through some of the videos from one of my many adventures.

Hartland Quay in North Devon, I shot this just over a year ago.

There's something about that raw, rugged coastline that I can't get out of my head.

You might spot the Leofoto tripod making an appearance too, wedged into the rocks as usual, doing what it does best. 🙌
Think it might be time to plan a return trip. 👀

Have you ever visited somewhere that just stuck with you like this?

Drop it below — I'm always looking for the next location. 👇

Follow along for more of Britain's wild and beautiful coastline. 📷
