I took a rest from social media yesterday as it was my 65th birthday. In years gone past this might have marked the time for my retirement, and my sudden taking up of bowls, golf or fishing. However, none of this happened, I am not retired, have no desire to play old people's marbles, have no golf bats and don't bother fish. Back to my standard routine

I have been staggered by the number of good wishes, congratulations and general good feeling that has been directed my way. Really unexpected and very well received – thank you all.

I had a great day with my close family, wife Julie and youngest son Lewis. Lewis took us out to the The Soulville Steakhouse in Nottingham. My steak was superb company great of course. In the afternoon we returned to Chateau Dachey-Jenkins and watched the latest Predator film Predator: Badlands. The rest of the day involved the eating of crisps, drinking of beer, and rum, and a quantity of mead (Thank you Sarah), and the day was enjoyable and mellow. To come is a visit to the Welbeck Brewery to visit their Rum distillery section.

So, thank you again everyone and I will now return to my normal routine. Photography of events and conferences (Pete Jenkins Photography) will resume, editing of rugby photos from my Fleet Street days (From the Back of a Motorbike), working on the sixth of my Rugby Club Players Books (Leicester Tigers), digitising and repair of old photographs (Detail Photography) and other rugby, aero and photographic projects as they present themselves.

My life is truly blessed – thank you

40 years and counting, Life Membership of the National Union of Journalists for Nottingham freelance photographer Pete Jenkins

I enjoy my work, always have done, whether it was photographing local activities and sports for West London newspapers, Rugby matches for Fleet Street or Conferences for NGOs and industry.
Last week I was the proud recipient of Life Membership of the National Union of Journalists, presented to me by Nottingham NUJ branch chairperson Benedict Cooper.

I am not an outgoing chap by nature and find it difficult to stand up in public or praise my own achievements. So it was a bit daunting when I was asked to attend the NUJ Nottingham branch meeting last week and make a short speech and receive a certificate marking my Life Membership of the National Union of Journalists.

It seems like yesterday when I chatted to Barry Fairall (then of the Guardian) and other journos at a rugby match about union membership, and it was Barry who kindly proposed me to the London Freelance branch of the union.

Within only a few months I was caught up in the Wapping dispute...

Here I am more than 40 years later. What happened to all those years?

Red Bull Matadors aerobatic team

Much to my surprise, I have now gone through my entire collection of different aircraft. So from now on a Saturday, I will instead show you individual photos (of aeroplanes) that I like.

The red Bull Matadors were a small team of two flying the XtremeAir Sbach 300. Designed by Philippe Steinbach and produced by XtremeAir based in Cochstedt. Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones were the two pilots, and they performed some amazing stunts, specialising in flying in very close formation indeed. I photographed them in 2016, when the team was probably at its height.
These two pilots performed an aerobatic routine the likes of which I can genuinely say I have not seen before or since. The close flying was simply outstanding, and it was a thrill to observe.
I have no idea where they are now, as they no longer seem to be part of the Red Bull event team. The aircraft type is still in production (first produced in 2012)

History of Flight (revisited) – Robin DR400 a single engine d French monoplane with a ‘cranked’ wing used extensively for flight training in France.

The latest post in my personal weekly history of flying aircraft (that I have photographed) is the French Robin DR400.

The Robin DR400although a development of the DR300 model has little to distinguish it from its predecessor, other than a slightly wider cabin and forward sliging canopy. It has the same cranked (Jodel) type wing. It did have a better dashboard lay-outy meant to be easier to read.
The design is considered a bit old-school made of canvas covered wood. The cranked wing allows for better stability, and I am told safer ‘stalls’.
More than 2,700 have been built, and there are still hundreds DR400s being used in clubs as trainers and rental aircraft. Production ceased in 2014, and the new model is the Robin DR401 which at a first glance looks very similar but apparently has a larger cockpit, and the control surfaces now have electric trim and flaps with variants for "long range" and "aerotow" (mostly to do with the chosen engine).

History of Flight (revisited) – Jodel - a series of very distinctive, French, low-wing monoplanes, all built under licence.

The latest post in my personal weekly history of flying aircraft (that I have photographed) are Jodel aircraft in some of their many disguises.

Jodel aircraft are very distinctive. Designed by the company ‘Société Avions Jodel’. Which began trading in 1946 owned and run by Édouard Joly and his son-in-law Jean Délémontez. Their first aircraft was the D9 Bebe. Délémontez was a trained aeronautical engineer, and Joly had built an aeroplane before the war. They sold more than 500 Bebe’s and went on to design a number of trainers – the two seat D11 was next followed by the D150, D18, D19 and D20. All the models are immediately recognisable in having this distinctive cantilever (Jodel) wing.

Jodel designed aeroplanes were licence-built by a number of different European manufacturers, and they are even built at home from Licensed issued plans.

Jodels’ are made from wood and flying surfaces with traditional old school dope fabric.

Fascinating aircraft and very distinctive with that wing, Jodel designed aircraft seem to be everywhere.

‘Salute 50,’ the biggest Salute yet at the 2023 Wargames show at the ExCel Exhibition and Conference Centre in London
I cover events and conferences all over the country, and as I am based in Nottingham, I quite often get asked to cover tabletop wargaming events, Nottingham being the acknowledged centre (the lead belt) of UK tabletop wargaming.
This particular show was in a huge windowless aircraft hangar of a room.
Rugby -Yes.
Conferences – Yes.
Events – Yes.

Lots of aeroplanes, old and, er, well older still. Shuttleworth Opening show of the season 707/05/2023.
I enjoy my work, always have done, whether it was photographing local activities and sports for West London newspapers, Rugby matches for Fleet Street or Conferences for NGOs and industry.
However, the events I look forward to most are those that are connected with aircraft and flight.
One of my favourite venues is Old Warden, the home of the Shuttleworth collection, which has some of the world’s oldest flying aeroplanes.
Rugby -Yes.
Conferences – Yes.
Events – Yes.

I also undertake regular commissions from my long-standing Fleet Street clients as well.
