Nearly every wedding photographer’s website and socials currently promises some variation of: “natural storytelling imagery capturing authentic moments while remaining unobtrusively in the background.”
Which is lovely.
And also slightly impossible.
Because at some point somebody has to:
• organise family photos
• find missing grandparents
• fix buttonholes
• move empty glasses from the tables to be out of shot
• reassure nervous humans
• distract overtired toddlers
• and gently stop Uncle Dave wandering into the ceremony holding a pint.
The truth is good wedding photography is not about “hiding in the background” all day.
It’s about knowing when presence helps and when absence matters.
It’s being calm enough that the day keeps flowing naturally around you, the couple.
And experienced enough to notice the important things before they turn into stresses. That’s the bit that makes the difference. And experienced photographers have this down pat; they take cracking shots AND have been around enough weddings and people to notice and gently direct as well, ensuring you are the centre of attention and they are in the background.
Chat to a few of us photographers and find someone who matches your energy, as well as someone whose style you like; we’ll be around you for a long time on one of your most special days, mixing alongside family and friends; getting it right is not just for the photos.
