On Saturday I was given an amazing opportunity to go out with some of the local experts from my nature group with to record species on 8 uninhabited islands west of Mull, some of these islands have never had records on them before, we felt like true pioneers! We made it ashore to 6 of them, one of the islands we didn't fancy going ashore to, you can maybe understand seeing the last couple of images!
It was such a fantastic day. We managed to record quite alot considering the little amount of time we had on each island. I heard quite a lot of squeals of excitement with plant species being found but I was searching for moths and caterpillars. Highlight for me was finding so many Garden Tiger caterpillars! The numbers have declined so much here so it's nice to see them doing well away out there, in one little area there was 7.
The rock formations were just amazing to see, clambering off a dingy onto slippy rocks was not the most fun with many of us finding new positions we didn't think was possible with our bodies but Cameron and Struan at Coastal Connections were amazing as always and we all left the islands with the correct number of fingers and toes π.
I am very grateful to have been asked as I doubt I would of ever had the chance to visit these islands otherwise β€οΈ
The islands we visited were,
Eilean a' Chalmain- south of Erraid Sound.
Eilean Dubh-also south of Erraid Sound.
Eilean nam Muc, off SW tip of Erraid
Eilean Dubh, west of Erraid
Eilean Musimul, off S coast of Iona
Soa Island, SW of Iona
The last 3 photos are of Stac Mhic Mhurchaidh, NW of Iona. There was a hill baggers group also on the boats. Only one person has ever been able to make it to the top. Six of their members made it, hats off to them. I couldn't even look at one point!
A fantastic day for all π
