109 moths of 34 species recorded last night πŸ¦‹
A decent variety overall, although quite a few species were only represented by single figures again β€” very similar to what I was seeing this time last year.

I keep yearly records, so it’s hard not to compare. Looking back at late May 2024, I was regularly getting 200+ moths in a single trap, which always makes me a bit concerned when numbers are noticeably lower now.

Still, there is plenty to appreciate from last night’s catch, here are 5 photos πŸ“Έ

Instagram also seems determined to test my patience at the moment β€” anything over 5 photos and the app crashes, forcing a restart… and honestly, I’m far too tired to argue with it after another 3am start ! πŸ˜‚

2. Birch Mocha
3. Clouded Silver
4. Peacock Moth
5. Peppered Moth

Ps thanks to my sister Sheila for coming out with me and writing and tallying them up as I called them out, always get through it alot quicker when she is there and it helps especially when midges are sucking us dry πŸ˜‚

The Scorched Wing - Plagodis dolabraria.
Moth recording season has started for me πŸ₯³ 3am starts the last couple of days has floored me tonight but when I get one of my favourite moths looking so pristine... to me.... it's definitely worth it ❀️ just look at those colours! Such a fantastic moth! Β It gets its name as it resembles a piece of scorched or burnt paper.

This is the kind of moth that makes sleep deprivation feel completely justified for a few minutes πŸ˜‚

On Saturday I was given an amazing opportunity to go out with some of the local experts from my nature group with to record species on 8 uninhabited islands west of Mull, some of these islands have never had records on them before, we felt like true pioneers! We made it ashore to 6 of them, one of the islands we didn't fancy going ashore to, you can maybe understand seeing the last couple of images!
It was such a fantastic day. We managed to record quite alot considering the little amount of time we had on each island. I heard quite a lot of squeals of excitement with plant species being found but I was searching for moths and caterpillars. Highlight for me was finding so many Garden Tiger caterpillars! The numbers have declined so much here so it's nice to see them doing well away out there, in one little area there was 7.

The rock formations were just amazing to see, clambering off a dingy onto slippy rocks was not the most fun with many of us finding new positions we didn't think was possible with our bodies but Cameron and Struan at Coastal Connections were amazing as always and we all left the islands with the correct number of fingers and toes πŸ˜‚.

I am very grateful to have been asked as I doubt I would of ever had the chance to visit these islands otherwise ❀️

The islands we visited were,
Eilean a' Chalmain- south of Erraid Sound.
Eilean Dubh-also south of Erraid Sound.
Eilean nam Muc, off SW tip of Erraid
Eilean Dubh, west of Erraid
Eilean Musimul, off S coast of Iona
Soa Island, SW of Iona

The last 3 photos are of Stac Mhic Mhurchaidh, NW of Iona. There was a hill baggers group also on the boats. Only one person has ever been able to make it to the top. Six of their members made it, hats off to them. I couldn't even look at one point!

A fantastic day for all 😊

Common Whitethroat picked the perfect frame for me!

Whitethroats winter in Africa. The males arrive a good week earlier than the female so they can prepare their territories and prepare nest sites to attract the females!

It will always amaze me these birds coming all the way from Africa to Kerrera, absolutely blows my mind!

Can you spot the Ringed Plover chick?

Disturbance is a big issue for ground nesting birds.

When going off road or to any beaches please watch/listen out for them. If you hear bird alarm calls then move on. Disturbing them can make them fly away leaving the chicks to get cold and starve or a bird not returning to their eggs. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they are not there! Sticking to a track or path is the solution.

Please be careful, respectful, and give wildlife the space it needs!
