Not having your camera set up in a way that works for you makes everything feel harder than it needs to.

These are the settings I use 90% of the time, so if yours is still sitting in the box because the menus made your brain hurt, use these as a starting point.

For a long time when I was learning photography, I assumed if I used the right autofocus mode for focusing, that was basically job done.

The penny drop for me was realising I still had to lock ON TO my subjects, keep autofocus engaged + physically follow them with my camera as they moved.

That one change transformed how I captured my kids, birds and everything else!

No, we didn’t win the lottery - I finally hit 10K followers (now 14k since we recorded this 😳) + it felt so special to share it with my son…

Because he’s the reason I first picked up a camera 10 years ago. I only wanted to capture his newborn era properly. I had no plans to become a photographer, teach women, build a creative business or end up living this life in Portugal. I just wanted to take beautiful pics of my baby + find bits of myself in the chaos.

Photography grew around the kids - squeezed into evenings + weekends, built from my bed + taken in directions I could never have planned. I’ve changed my mind, got things wrong + nearly given up more times than Instagram will ever know 😜

Now that my baby is 10, about to start big school + celebrating the community that exists because I once bought a camera for him - that’s the bit that proper got me 💙

So yes, we were celebrating 10K, but I was also celebrating what ‘just a hobby’ can become when you give yourself space to do the thing!

Ten years ago, when I first picked up a proper camera, I was completely clueless.

I got nowhere trying to understand every camera setting at once. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus modes - they felt like separate pieces I was somehow supposed to put together while taking a picture.

The shift came when I stopped viewing settings as technical parts and started seeing them as storytelling tools.

• Shutter speed could change how movement felt.
• Aperture could decide what mattered in the frame.
• Exposure could change the whole mood.

Suddenly, photography wasn’t about getting the ‘right’ settings. It was about using the camera to show people how I saw things.

Manual Mode gets MUCH easier when you stop looking at ISO, aperture + shutter speed as three things you need to constantly juggle 😵‍💫

Instead, I want you to make three decisions, in the same order, every time:

LIGHT → FOCUS → BALANCE.

That’s it.

The more you practise this order, the less you’ll panic and the more instinctive it becomes.

And THAT is when you can stop thinking so much about your camera + start thinking about the images you actually want to make!

I first came across manual mode from a male photographer, and the jargon flying my way completely overwhelmed me - it actually nearly stopped me from progressing with photography.

But when I eventually got to the crux of each technical lesson, I realised most of it was actually pretty simple. It just me a long while to crack it!

So reducing that time became my one-woman mission 😜

Teaching photography in a way that feels fun, makes sense and actually works with your brain is the bit I care about most.

When to stay put and when to let someone walk into the frame. And most importantly, when not to give up on a photo too quickly.

This week, I had a whirlwind trip to Marseille 🇫🇷 , firstly to meet a wonderful family and take pictures for a 50th birthday, before heading into the city for 24 hours of solo wandering.

It’s something I’m always a little reluctant to do, but what gets me over the line every time is my camera. Without it, I’d feel completely lost.

I like to read a city with my settings, and Marseille encapsulated a slow shutter speed for me. Its grittiness + creativity called for that kind of visual.

Do you ever do that when you land in a city?
Adapt the way you shoot to what the city needs?
