A new home for some of my photographic stories 📷

I've just launched a RobbieCimages page on Buy Me a Coffee.

It gives me another place to share photographs, thoughts, work in progress and some of the stories behind the images, the things that don't always fit into a Facebook or Instagram post.

I've started with The Stories We Pass By, a photograph of something completely ordinary that made me stop and look.

Sometimes the things we pass every day have the most to say.

Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see.

Three photographs. Three very ordinary scenes — but each one made me stop.

An object forgotten, something hidden, and a gull apparently determined to make off with the mooring rope!

Photography, for me, is often about noticing the small things that others might simply walk past.

Stone, Light & Time | Abbeys and Cathedrals Through My Eyes

I’ve always been drawn to the way light interacts with old stone — revealing texture, craftsmanship and details that can easily be overlooked.

Although much of my photography leans towards black and white, sometimes colour tells the story better. Stained glass is certainly one of those occasions.

This short film brings together some of those photographs, not simply as a record of these remarkable buildings, but as I see them.

Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see.

RobbieCimages is now on YouTube!

I've been thinking for a while about another way of sharing my photography, not simply individual photographs, but collections of images, the stories behind them and, eventually, some of the thinking behind my projects and books.

So I've taken the plunge and started a RobbieCimages YouTube channel.

My first video is Sometimes We Look, Sometimes We See | Street Photography, a short black-and-white collection of those ordinary moments that can so easily pass unnoticed.

There is no narration and no explanation of what you should see. Just the photographs and the opportunity to make your own observations.

Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see. There is a difference.

This is only the beginning. I'll be adding more street photography, portraits, projects and stories behind individual photographs as the channel develops.

Sometimes, stepping back tells more of the story.

I could have moved closer and made this entirely about the person on the bench. Instead, I chose to keep my distance.

For me, the space around her is just as important as the portrait itself. The tree, the empty grass and the soft foreground leave her almost isolated within the scene.

And then there's her gaze.

What is she looking at? What is she thinking?

We don't know — and I rather like that.

Would you have moved closer, or kept the wider view?

ONE FACE, THREE STORIES

How much does it take to change the way we see someone?

These three portraits of Paul were taken using essentially the same lighting approach, predominantly from behind, allowing much of his face to remain in shadow.

What fascinated me was how little needed to change.

A turn of the head.
A shift of the eyes.
A subtle expression.

And suddenly, we begin to read the person differently.

For me, portrait photography isn't always about lighting everything. Sometimes the absence of light can be just as important as the light itself.

Paul brought the character; my job was simply to use the light — and sometimes the lack of it, to reveal it.

Sometimes colour simply has to win.

I normally lean towards black and white, but occasionally nature makes the decision for me.

I spotted this Common Darter resting for just long enough to capture the moment. The orange of the dragonfly against those purple flowers immediately caught my eye, and for me, taking away the colour would take away part of the story.

But what do you think?

Would you keep this one in colour, or would you be tempted to try it in black and white?

Sometimes, it pays to look up.

Whilst I was walking through Torquay, it wasn't the grand architecture that caught my eye, it was that unexpected splash of colour hiding above it.

Blue, green and pink, almost peeking out from behind the older buildings.

It's so easy to walk along looking straight ahead and never notice what's above us.
