Rain, Prints and a Coffee Baptism

Rain cancelled Penryn Fair Day last weekend, just after Penryn Camera Club had transformed the hall ready for our usual 250 visitors. Rather than waste the effort, honorary vice president Derek Godridge LRPS AFIAP turned the cancelled fair into a weekend exhibition, running through Bank Holiday Monday.

Visitor numbers reached 112, with visitors praising the quality and variety of prints. This year members chose their own favourites rather than relying on club selection, producing a wonderfully varied display. One lucky visitor took home their chosen print, while photographers gained the traditional reward: bragging rights.

Thursday brought the winter season back with 43 members, a visitor and new St Ives members. After belated awards, thanks to our summer organisers and a run through the programme and competition rules, 51 members’ images on “What makes you smile” filled the screen, each with its own story.

There was plenty of chatter, a crooked screen and a computer that survived being baptised with coffee.

Cruise Ships and Camera Slips

Penryn Camera Club gathered at Pendennis this week, pausing to admire the enormous floating city sitting at anchor before setting off along the peninsula’s hidden coastal paths towards the Falmouth Hotel.

Sparrows, a common buzzard, yachts, butterflies and street photography all found their way onto memory cards, while the changing evening light provided extra opportunities for anyone willing to stop and look twice.

As usual, the photography came with plenty of wandering, chatting, shared ideas and laughter. Tea, coffee and something a little stronger rounded off the evening.

Meanwhile, members are preparing for the Penryn Fair Day exhibition (this Saturday, under the clock tower, 10-4) while bravely ignoring the forecast of torrential rain.

Godolphin, Churches, and Wandering

Penryn Camera Club enjoyed two contrasting outings this week, beginning at Godolphin as the showers finally eased.

After a quick coffee in the barn, a National Trust staff member gave a fascinating talk about the estate's remarkable history. The Godolphin family lived there from the 1300s until 1786, building their wealth through mining. Members explored the gardens, old milking parlour, C***r House and the King's Room, reputedly used by the future Charles II during his escape to Scilly in 1646.

Later, members met at St Feock Church before walking towards Pill Creek. The 13th-century tower, riverside scenery and woodland paths provided plenty of opportunities for photography, conversation and the inevitable debate over which way to go.

Two outings, plenty of history and even more good company. That is summer at PCC.

Tide In, Camera's Out

Penryn Camera Club discovered this week that planning can sometimes be exactly what the photographer ordered.

At Devoran Quay, the tide was IN, rather than out, producing a “YAY!” from members and photographic possibilities. The brief was simple: find something yellow, something pointed and something triangular.

Health and Safety warned about rising water and wet feet, then photographers scattered like startled partridges. Yellow lichen, pointed pampas grass and a triangular metal gate soon fell victim to hungry lenses. Boats slipped through the scene, swans sensibly departed for the far bank while sunshine illuminated the ruffled water.

Several potential new members joined the conversation, discovering that our outings involve plenty of laughter and photography.

Eventually, cameras gave way to chips and refreshments at the Old Quay Inn, where the b**r garden mysteriously filled with photographers.

Another successful evening, proving that plans occasionally improve by going right.

The Case of the Missing Sea

Penryn Camera Club visited Mylor this week, only to discover that low tide had thoughtfully arrived an hour before the photographers.

Instead of sparkling reflections, members found mud, mooring chains and boats patiently waiting for the sea to return.

Fortunately, Mylor is one of Cornwall's most photogenic locations, with its maritime history and beautiful setting on Carrick Roads providing plenty of inspiration.

As always, the laughter outweighed any disappointment.

Cameras searched out details, textures and evening light, proving that creativity is often born from unexpected circumstances.

The outing ended at the Lemon Arms, where refreshments were accompanied by lively conversation and several ‘helpful’ suggestions about tide tables.

Windmills, Mine Shafts, and Much Merriment

Penryn Camera Club enjoyed two contrasting Cornish adventures this week.

The first took members to Windmill Farm Nature Reserve on the Lizard, where the historic windmill, wildlife-rich heathland and peaceful ponds provided endless photographic inspiration. The reserve is renowned for its birds, dragonflies and fascinating history stretching from the Bronze Age to the Second World War.

Later in the week, members met at St Euny Church before strolling to Wheal Uny, exploring Cornwall's rich mining heritage through weathered engine houses and atmospheric ruins. Along the way, there was plenty of laughter, shared advice and friendly conversation, which has become the hallmark of our summer programme.

The day concluded, as many good outings do, at the Fox and Hounds, comparing photographs and putting the world to rights over a well-earned b**r.
