Back in 2022, that childhood dream came true when I went to Snetterton Racetrack. It was an incredible race day; I got to see legends like Colin Turkington competing in his 500th race, a massive milestone, and capture stunning cars like Adam Smalley in his Porsche AG. The roar of the engines, the smell of the tarmac, the atmosphere, it was everything I'd imagined. I took my camera, of course, and just let loose, capturing hundreds of photos.
And then, as it so often happens, life took over, and those photos ended up on a forgotten hard drive because I was never quite satisfied with the edits.
Until this morning. With a quiet moment in the office, I decided to open that folder again... and honestly, I was blown away. It's funny how you can look back at your own work and see how much you've grown. With the skills I've honed since then, I was able to re-edit these shots and finally bring out the raw energy I felt standing by that track.
It was pure joy to just play with the edits. I wanted to recreate that incredible feeling of motion, so I'd used a slow shutter speed on the day to get that beautiful blur in the background. In the edit, I pushed it further, playing with selective colour to make the cars literally explode from a black and white world, creating a kind of gritty, artistic feel.
This is why personal passion projects are so vital. This isn't just me messing around with car photos. The intense focus it takes to pan your camera perfectly with a car at 120mph is the same focus I bring to capturing a keynote speaker on stage. The creativity used to make a race car feel heroic is the same creativity I use to tell the story of an ambitious local brand.
It all comes from the same place: a love for capturing incredible stories.
What's a childhood passion that still inspires you in your professional life today? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
