♻ Bridge of Don Recycling Centre – Aberdeen

The Bridge of Don Household Waste & Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Claymore Drive is one of Aberdeen’s main recycling facilities, helping residents responsibly dispose of household waste and recycle a wide range of materials.

Operated by SUEZ on behalf of Aberdeen City Council, the modern site replaced the older Scotstown Road tip and was designed to improve recycling rates while making it easier for residents to drop off waste safely and efficiently.

PETERHEAD POWER STATION

Most people never think about Peterhead Power Station, but it’s doing more than you’d expect.

It was built during the 1970s energy crisis, when the UK needed reliable backup power. That’s why it started out running on oil. Over time, it adapted; now it runs on natural gas and can ramp its output up or down depending on demand.

Its location on the northeast coast isn’t accidental either. It sits close to North Sea gas infrastructure, which makes fuel supply more direct and efficient.

There were even plans at one point to turn it into a carbon capture site, storing emissions under the North Sea, a sign of how important the site could be in the future, not just the past.

It’s not the kind of place that gets attention, but it plays a steady role in keeping the grid stable, especially when renewable energy like wind isn’t consistent.

It’s one of those bits of infrastructure that just quietly does its job.

🏰 Inverugie Castle, forgotten on the Ugie

Just a couple of miles outside Peterhead sits one of our area’s most overlooked historic sites, Inverugie Castle, once a proud stronghold of the Cheynes and later the powerful Keith Earls Marischal.

Long before the grand tower house stood here, the site began as a motte‑and‑bailey fort in the 13th–14th century. Today, only the grassy mound remains, but it’s a quiet reminder of the families who shaped the North‑east for centuries.

The later stone tower house, often called Cheyne’s Tower, was once described as “exceptionally fine.” Sadly, by the late 1800s it had fallen into ruin, battered by storms and eventually demolished in 1899 for safety. All that survives now are scattered stones, the motte, and the peaceful curve of the River Ugie flowing past.

It’s one of those places that rewards a slow wander: a moment to imagine the noise, power, and politics that once filled this now‑silent corner of Buchan.

If you’ve never been, it’s worth a visit, not for what’s still standing, but for what your imagination can rebuild.
