New sail on and a bumpy first passage to Licata. We’ve taken an annual berth this year as we plan to spend more time on land and take the pressure off having to go long distances. Thanks to our pals on In the Mood who sorted us out with their old sail after ours delaminated on our way back from Tunisia, they also made us a beautiful wood cup holder❤️ It was good to get back out on the water, downwind sailing all the way and the mandatory beer out at our new port to end the day

Another little road trip. First stop Sicily’s chocolate capital, Modica. After a walk up the hill to the impressive cathedral we went chocolate hunting. We found more than 150 flavours including bubble gum and jasmine. They use an old ‘raw’ Aztec style so it has a crunchy texture, like there’s rice crispies inside! We spent the afternoon in pretty Scicli with and a tapas lunch on a sunny terrace 🚘

We were welcomed back to Sicily with a prime view of Etna. While we waited for sail repairs and boat parts to arrive we hired a car. First stop lovely Noto, another splendid example of baroque architecture and where we found our favourite cafe for people watching and treats. We finally tried the Sicilian classic, brioche con gelato 🍦

We spent a lovely night in beautiful Catania before an early flight the next morning. One final bowl of pasta Alla Norma, a couple of gin martinis and we even caught Etna emerging through the clouds on the way home ⛵️

Last little trip of the season took us inland to Regusa. The magical old town sits on a hilltop, with Baroque architecture all around. We got lost in its steep narrow alleys, caught our breath in picturesque squares and had the best arancini washed down with local craft beers under the shade of a tree. You’re meant to start in the upper new town, we did it in reverse which meant a steep climb up hundreds of steps to catch the bus back ⛵️

Lovely final sail of the season to our winter Port, marina di Ragusa. We had to navigate around oil rigs, which was a new thing. The chart plotter gave little detail, so we scrabbled around in the nav desk for a paper chart - it seems they still have a use!

We arrived a month later than planned and were relieved to dock. We found a vibrant community, made a few new pals, enjoyed sunset beers overlooking a lovely stretch of sand, stumbled across the annual festival and put Aquila to bed for winter⛵️

Licata was the first port we’d been to this season that felt like a community. As soon as we’d moored, fellow sailors came to say hello, expecting that we were there for winter. We were just there for the night, so we made use of the supermarket right next to the marina and headed into town for a beer ⛵️

We sailed into seasidey San Leone for the Valley of the Temples, the best preserved Greek ruins outside of Greece. It’s a huge site and the main attraction is the Temple of Concordia, also used as the UNESCO World Heritage logo ❤️

Trick or treat? Sailors are naturally transient but many take a break over winter, forming communities with common interests and goals. It’s a cooking pot of nationalities, in a good way, and bonds which typically take years, form over just a few weeks, or even days. Halloween is an excuse for a party and Regusa marina sets the bar. Meanwhile in town, little ones take their pumpkin pots to shops and bars who are happy to offer treats ❤️

Our first time in Sicily was a decade ago. It took 2 flights from Manchester and 3 year’s of sailing seasons from Plymouth. It felt good to be back and Sciacca was just the right mix of local life and tourism. It’s a colourful fishing port known for its ceramics and art ran throughout the town. We made the steep climb up to town every day, had coffee in the square, fish in the harbour, tracked down the craft ale beer hall and had one of the best meals we’ve ever had at Hostaria del Vicolo ❤️
