Obscura Legacies - Zine Launch & Exhibition

Join us for an exhibition to mark the launch of the ‘Obscura Legacies’ project and the publication of the first book/zine, ‘Derek Swindley and his Camera Obscuras’ by Fotonow CIC.

‘Obscura Legacies’ aims to bring Camera Obscuras to life, supporting the publication of Derek Swindley’s inspiring creative journey.

Derek Swindley was a self-taught expert in optics and photography, combining deep technical knowledge with remarkable mechanical ingenuity. In the 1980s, he built what is believed to be the UK’s first mobile Camera Obscura, housed in a caravan.

🗓 Preview event: Fri 27 Feb 2026, 5-7pm
🗓 Exhibition: Sat 28 Feb 2026, 10am-4pm
📍 107 Cornwall Street, Plymouth, PL1 1PA

A series of publications is planned as part of the project. Future publications will explore the Camera Obscuras Derek inspired and supported, how they were built, and the artistic, social and community projects they have generated over the past 20 years.

Stories in Nature 🍃

Odils Learning Foundation is proud to announce the launch of Stories in Nature, a community programme delivered in partnership with Fotonow (CIC) and Greenwood Music CIC, and generously funded by the The National Lottery Community Fund.

The project blends nature, storytelling, digital media, employment and wellbeing support for people from refugee backgrounds in Plymouth. Across immersive 10‑week programmes with workshops, wellbeing walks, time in nature and 1‑to‑1 mentoring, participants will explore personal stories, grow creative skills and build confidence in safe inclusive spaces.

Stories in Nature will:

- Grow wellbeing through outdoor experiences and creative expression

- Strengthen community bonds by sharing stories across cultures

- Equip participants with digital and language skills to amplify their voices

- Celebrate diversity and resilience through collaborative art and media

Programmes run through spring, summer and autumn, ending with public showcases of creative work that reflect diverse experiences and promote social cohesion.

Stuart Foren, Business Development Manager at Odils, said:

“This is about more than creativity, it is about connection and empowerment. Working with Fotonow and Greenwood Music we are creating spaces where people can learn, develop and feel seen, heard and valued. Thanks to National Lottery players we can bring this vision to life and support those who need it most.”

Odils Learning Foundation is a Plymouth charity of 25 years supporting asylum seekers, refugees and minority groups through English language education, skills development, employment mentoring and community engagement.

Greenwood Music provides green social prescriptions in a 40‑acre Cornish Atlantic rainforest to improve wellbeing for people and planet.

Fotonow is a socially engaged photography and film organisation in Plymouth that removes barriers to creative participation and for 16 years has helped people use media as a voice.

We thank all National Lottery players for making this community focussed project possible.
