Water’s Edge: The Ceredigion Lifeguards
Llangrannog Beach, Summer 2018
This series began during one of the many summers I spent frying chips on Llangrannog beach, where my view from the fryers was always of the lifeguard unit. There was something poetic about watching them watch the sea, so I decided to turn that observation into a full project and book.
Looking back at old work is always revealing: you notice which images still resonate, and wonder how you might have approached them differently now. One of my favourite memories from this series is the fifth frame being selected for Portrait of Britain- that email remains one of the most exciting I’ve ever received.
This year, I’ve been trying to shoot more for the joy of it, but also to spend more time with the work I’ve already made. In a world where we create, post, and move on so quickly, there’s something special about revisiting old ideas. Maybe that’s why making books and prints feels so special- the physicality invites you to return. It’s making me want to return to that simple way of observing and making, without overanalysing the outcome, or the reason. I was definitely more in tune with that mindset at uni.
