is perfectly positioned along the Luangwa river to enjoy elephants. A regular crossing point for herds and lone bulls, you’ll often be sat enjoying coffee with them swimming across the river in front of you.

Stop worrying about your camera, your lens, how big it is (heh 😏) - this video and image shows the dramatic change of adjusting your angle relative to the subject. Now both angles work, but as an image the darker higher contrast version certainly grabs the attention more right? Good guides on safari may already have an eye for this sort of thing but of course that’s why heading out with a professional photographer can help fine tune the position of a vehicle, line up the subject with the right background etc. When you scroll through pictures on instagram, rather than checking what lens it was taken with, try and identify the angle of light, the position of the camera, why it works. THAT is how you’ll improve your own photography.

Breakfast is served. A quiet morning can quickly change. Finding a small clan of hyenas scrapping over a carcass certainly livened things up and it was fascinating to watch the power dynamics between this group.

The calm controlled power of leopards. Lions may be the biggest but considering they spend 99.99999% of their time asleep it’s much more interesting watching these agile masters of stealth. These are two brothers who despite leaving their mother’s side are still occasionally hanging around together. I’m not sure that will last too much longer as they look to stake their own claim in the valley of the leopard.

Vegetarian doesn’t mean safe. When tensions rise in a hippo pod consequences can be explosive. From floating sausages, slinging their own poo around as they defecate, they quickly turn into dangerous powerhouses. The scars across the back here speak volumes to their ability to inflict damage on one another.

As promised a few more images of my favourite animal to spend time with - the Painted Wolf, Wild Dog. Whilst they still have their fair share of time simply sleeping off the heat of the day, the community and interactions between pack members is so wonderful to watch.

There are lots of photos of the wild dogs to come but today has to feature one of the most well known leopards in the area near Msandile River Lodge; Lucy. A female that’s incredibly comfortable around game vehicles allowing some truly intimate encounters. She has delighted thousands of safari-goers and hopefully will continue to do so for more years to come.

Painted wolf, the proper name for what we usually call wild dogs, is far more apt. Each dog looks like a work of art, with completely unique markings that help to tell them apart. They have been really visible the last few weeks and I’ve been fortunate to spend quite a few mornings and evenings watching them play, sleep, and hunt.
