Confession time: I’ve been telling mums not to worry about perfect smiles… while trying to persuade my own nephew to smile nicely for a photo.

He’s 11, so you can imagine how well that went.

The funny thing is, I know better.

The photos where he looked most like himself were the ones where he had forgotten about the camera completely. Those were the real smiles.

So this is me taking my own advice.

Kids do not need to perform for beautiful family photos.

They need space to move and the freedom to be themselves.

That is when the fun and natural moments appear.

Have you ever told your kids to smile and immediately regretted it?

For the mums always taking the photos - it’s your turn to be in them.

I get it though, it’s far easier to stay behind the camera.

You see a wee moment happening, the funny face, or the way they’re looking at their dad, and you just grab your phone without even thinking.

And then suddenly you realise there are hundreds of photos of everyone else… and barely any with you in them.

But in 5, 10 or even 20 years, your kids won’t care if your hair was doing its own thing or not.

They’ll just want to see you there too.

Holding them. Laughing with them. Being part of it all.

So this is your wee reminder to get in the frame.

Not when everything feels sorted or perfect.

Just now, as you are. Because that’s the bit they’ll want to remember.

You don’t need more photos of your kids.

I’m guessing your camera roll is already full of them doing all the cute wee things you never want to forget.

But do you know who’s missing far too often?

You.

You, the one who holds everything together and is the designated memory keeper of the family.

And I know that it can feel easier to stay behind the camera, I’ve felt that. But one day, your children won’t just want to see what they looked like.

They’ll want to see you there, too.

So do yourself and your kids a favour, and stop being invisible in your family story.

Being an auntie of 5 is one of the greatest joys of my life 🥹

It’s also taught me plenty about kids.

I know when to bring the craic and high energy!

And I know when to give kids some space to explore and relax.

Just like this wee moment. Not asking her to perform, but just noticing what was already there.

If the thought of forcing your family to sit still, smile nicely and pretend nobody’s got sand in their socks makes you want to cancel before you’ve even booked… I’m here to tell you family photos can feel completely different.

How? Very simple.

Let the kids lead.

Let them explore, run about like mad eejits, climb the dunes, bury their toes in the sand, wander back for a wee cuddle, then disappear again two seconds later.

That’s where the good stuff is.

No pressure to behave perfectly. Just a bit of gentle direction from me, plenty of space for everyone to be themselves, and photos that actually feel like your family.

I’m sure you’ve heard people say that photos get more precious with time.

I know firsthand that this is true.

When my dad died 5 years ago, I found myself searching through every drawer, box and album, looking for photos of him.

And it broke my heart that there weren’t enough.

The photos that I did find became so precious.

That experience has changed how I approach photography.

I know how important these photos will be when somebody opens a drawer years from now, searching for proof of a love that mattered.

A mum crossing the same stream her family has crossed for generations, carrying her baby through farmland that has been in their family for over 200 years!

And that’s exactly why studio photos have never really been for me. I’d much rather photograph your family somewhere that actually means something to you. The field your granda farmed. The beach you’ve gone to every summer since you were wee. The places that already hold your stories before I even arrive with a camera.
