Extracts from a creative life ..

20th July 2026

Up early for a big hike today which will test our nerve. The dappled light on the side of the cliffs catching my attention and I grab the X100T, switching over to a black and white preset.

The hike was indeed a challenge, but we make it back in one piece, legs burning, but hearts and minds full. I love the mountains. Not much in the way of images to be made mind you as I was more interested in the narrow ridges, airy drops and metal chains that helped us on our way. There was a spot of nice light filtering through the trees at the start of the hike mind you.

The sky holds a bit more interest this evening so it’s back out to try and capture the Massif again. Once again I have a couple of options in terms of focal length; 100-200 on the GFX 50r and then the 100-400 on the XT4.

With the latter it’s fun to pick out some of the smaller details, including Refuge du Gouter, and I wonder how many hikers are preparing for their final summit push in the morning.

With the 100-200 I decided to look at producing a panoramic image, stitching together first 5 and then 7 vertical images.

With the sun slipping below the mountains behind me the colour temperature shifted once more to perhaps my favourite palette of the evening.

And so bringing an end to a wonderful few days in Plain Joux, a location I’ll hopefully return to in 2027.

Life in the city ..

That was an incredible hike yesterday, up past three separate refuges and along some rather airy ridges. Just how I like it.

The X100T started to have a few issues half way into the hike, refusing to shoot at anything but F2, which of course under the bright midday sun rendered everything as a blank canvas. Switched over to the iPhone for the remainder of the walk.

Perhaps this really will be the last year I carry my beloved X100T. I wonder will a 23mm lens on the XT4 feel just as good.

And there’s me thinking the views of Mont Blanc from last nights park-up were impressive. Tonight, I’ve hit the jack-pot; Plain Joux. This place seems to be an adventurers playground and there is a pretty high probability of getting taken out by a Paraglider, mountain biker, trail runner or perhaps if you are particularly unlucky, all 3.

Initially I reach for the GFX 50r combined with the 100-200. There are a few wispy clouds dancing around the peaks and I try and frame one in the middle of my composition, but it never quite feels right.

The evening light on the peaks are incredible and an audible hush falls over the gathered crowds as the light shifts from yellows to orange and then finally to a soft pink/purple.

Spot a paraglider heading to the moon. Or perhaps Mont Blanc.

Haunted ...

I sometimes like to play a little with the descriptive search in Amazon photos as it can quite often pull some images from the archive that I had long since forgotten about. In this case I simply typed the word Haunted and these are a few of the images it returned.
