Things nobody tells you about visiting Skomer Island...

I wish someone had told me these before my first trip.

Some are brilliant. Some are unexpected. And one caught me completely off guard.

Watch until the end and let me know which surprised you most.

I’ve bought into the hype before.

Gear that looks great in promos, then annoys you the second you actually have to rely on it. It’s uncomfortable, overdesigned, built for marketing instead of real use.

That’s why I’ve become pretty ruthless with what I carry now. If it doesn’t earn its place, it’s gone.

Shimoda did. Not because of this, not because of a deal, it was already in my kit long before any of this came up.

So yeah, I’m now part of their ambassador program.

If you’ve ever asked what I actually trust when I’m out shooting, this is it.

My code is THOMAS10 if you want to try it yourself.

The woodland feels completely different now.

Bluebells covering the forest floor, soft spring light filtering through the trees… and the red squirrels are moving quietly through it all.

Spring has properly arrived.

but look up, and it’s a completely different world.

Red squirrels moving through the branches, balancing effortlessly high above the ground, exactly where they belong.

Finally managed to get back out this weekend, and the difference a few weeks makes is unreal.

Bluebells in full bloom and the red squirrels moving through them like they’ve always been there.

Spring has arrived.

Some days wildlife photography rewards patience.

There have been a few recent sightings of short eared Owls locally, so with a break in the weather I headed out to see if I could find them. As the light started to fade and the sun dropped toward the horizon, it looked like it might be another quiet evening.

Just as I was about to pack up and head home, one lifted silently from the grass.

For a few minutes it hunted across the field in the last of the evening light, one of those moments that reminds you exactly why you picked up a camera in the first place.

An hour spare. Grey skies. Steady rain. Sometimes that’s all you need.

I headed into my local reserve with and most of the woodland was quiet. This Great Tit was one of the few birds still active, sitting out in the rain while everything else stayed hidden.

Swipe to see the RAW vs the final edit. 👉🏻

The light was flat and ISO was high, so the file needed careful handling — lifting detail without destroying the mood, controlling noise, and keeping the rain visible without over-processing.

For me, the edit wasn’t about making it “bright and punchy.” It was about keeping that cold, damp atmosphere and letting the bird stand out naturally against it.
